What did we do for this annual service review? The annual service review for Berwick House included the following: The last key inspection was undertaken on 26th February 2009 when it received a quality rating of two stars. The home was asked to complete an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment by us. The AQAA is a self assessment and data set, which providers are asked to complete each year and is one of the main ways we obtain information about how they are meeting outcomes for people using their service. Completion of the AQAA gives providers the opportunity to tell us about their service and how well they think they are performing. The information given allows us to develop a picture of the service being provided and target our inspection activity. There was a good response from surveys sent to the home including people who live there and staff who work there. Some comments will be included in this report, however as this is a care home to look after people with dementia, residents comments are not available, but some relatives have made positive comments of which some will be included. We take into account what the home has told us about things that have happened in the previous twelve months, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. What has this told us about the service? The manager of the home returned the AQAA to us when we asked for it. The information was clear and showed how they were meeting the expectations and outcomes for people using the service. The manager told us they are preparing to apply for registration with the Care Quality Commission as this is a requirement of the Care Standards Act 2000, and the Care Homes Regulations 2001 where the registered person is not in day to day control of the home. They say they have been upgrading the home internally and externally so it is well maintained homely and comfortable for people to live in. They said maintenance of the home is taken seriously so it is safe and under constant review. They said all health and safety policies and procedures are in place as required by various legislative bodies. Comments from people using the service included, the home is very comfortable now for my relative, there have been some big changes. They told us they make sure Equality and Diversity needs of people living and working there are addressed by making sure various religious ministers visit individual residents as well as holding services in the home. Staff are recruited and trained based on the principles of Equality and Diversity so they are not disadvantaged in any way. Comments included, we are trained to respect people at all levels so we do not Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 discriminate against anybody for whatever reason. Information we received told us they are continuing to develop activity plans for people so that peoples needs and choices are met. They also said they keep the menus under constant review and listen to people who have personal choices, so they can be met at an individual level. Surveys we received told us people are happy with the food they receive at the home. Comments included, we make sure people have a choice about what they do, theres always something going on, my relative always has a choice of what to eat, they can be fussy but the staff know this and take it into account. They said there is a complaints procedure available to people who use the service which is included in the homes written information. They told us there have been no complaints made to the home in the previous twelve months. Staff surveys told us they are made aware of the complaints procedure and have received training in protecting people from harm or abuse. Comments included, we have had training about what to do if we suspect abuse, I think its a good thing so we know the right thing to do. The information we received told us staff continue to have access to training, and that the manager is focusing on developing Dementia training as this is a home which is registered to care for people whose primary need is dementia care. Comments from staff said they feel supported by the manager and training is focused upon all the time. Comments included, we work really well as a team and the manager is always thereto support us. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor information about this service and will carry out an inspection when required.
