Assistance is provided to enable each service user to follow their religious faith within the home and encouragement to participate in a local church of their particular denomination. Terminally ill Service Users needing nursing care or with Alzheimers disease are not accepted for accommodation, but should a Service Users condition deteriorate during their stay, every effort would be made to assist them using outside agencies. The current fees at the home are £404:00 to £468:00 per week. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included; The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and by staff. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. Information from any visits we have made to the service. What has this told us about the service? The care home sent their AQAA when we asked for it. The AQAA was clear and detailed giving us all the information required. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service. Surveys were provided to the people cared for in the home and staff; up to the date of writing the report six surveys have been returned from relatives and two from people receiving the service. Comments when asked what the home does well included the following from relatives: Cheerful attentive staff. Medical attention always available when required. Christian services regularly arranged. The care and support my parent gets is better then any other care home I have seen and could not ask for any better help or support. Cares about individuals. The whole place has a family atmosphere because the staff are so kind. My parents are both treated with great dignity and respect. At the moment they look after my mother very well with her different needs and ailments. They ring me when they are concerned about her health and let me know when a doctor has been called. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 And from a person receiving the service living in the home: Very welcoming, very caring, clean and comfortable. I enjoy the religious meetings, very friendly. When asked how the home could improve, the following comments were received: More choice of food, eg. cooked breakfast which is not available. More daytime activities would be nice. More variety on the food on offer. A relative has made a comment on a survey that it would be beneficial if an extra staff member was available at night time in the event of a person falling and requiring escort to hospital for treatment. The issue was discussed with the manager who states that policies and procedures are in place for any emergency situations at night. Any new person considering entering the home, is provided with a Service Users Guide which, explains the way the home is run. There is the opportunity of a four week trial visit before any decision is made. The home uses a person centred care planning approach which, is evaluated at regular intervals. Each person involved is supported to make their own decisions. Staff are taught the importance of equality and diversity with individual choices, wishes and capabilities recognised. As a Christian Home there are many opportunities for the promotion of faith and belief. Christian services are held in the home three or four times a week. Holy Communion is celebrated every Monday and all are welcome from any denomination. The home has strong links with the community. People in the home can access local activities and there are visits to the home from local schools and nurseries. Some people in the home have helped with bandage rolling to send to Rwanda for use in the hospital. Memory cards have been purchased for reminiscence activities. Pets as Therapy (PAT) dogs visit the home every month. Volunteers visit the home twice a week to spend time with the persons cared for and to chat. Staff are supported and encouraged with appropriate training. Additional training is to be provided on the implications of the Mental Capacity Act and the Deprivation of Liberties Safeguards. These are legal requirements necessary to ensure that the human rights are protected for persons who lack mental capacity and cannot make decisions for themselves. All staff have received training in the protection of vulnerable adults from abuse. The home provides access to advocates through Age Concern and the Care Aware Advocacy Service. All staff who administer medication have attended a training course in the last 18 months. Last years report from the community pharmacist recognised the high Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 standard of medication administration. The home has signed its agreement to the local councils Dignity in Care Charter and it has been discussed at a team meeting. Staff have recently attended training in Stroke Awareness, Diabetes Awareness and Dementia Awareness. The majority of staff have attended End of Life Care training earlier this year. There are currently 26 care staff and 17 have a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Care at level 2 or above. NVQ is the nationally agreed qualification necessary for staff in the caring services. The registered manager has five years management and experience in a care setting and has NVQ 4 in Health and Social Care, the Registered Managers Award and the Institute of Leadership and Management at level 5 Award in Management. Policies and procedures are in place with regard to any concerns and incidents. There has been one concern raised with the home over the last 12 months that has been resolved satisfactorily. There have been no concerns raised with the Care Quality Commission since the last key inspection. The manager continues to look at how the services provided by the home can improve and has commenced one to one leadership and management training. The home is looking towards achieving the International Standards Organisation (ISO) award which, is a recognised award for good quality. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor information about this service. We can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
