Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we had received, or asked for, since the last annual service review or key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and staff who work for the service. Information we have received about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened at the home. These are called notifications and in some circumstances are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection, any other visits made to the service and the last annual service review if appropriate. Relevant information provided by other organisations and what other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA). It provided all of the information we had asked for and had been completed clearly. The information in the AQAA supported our judgement that the service is still providing a good service. It showed that they know what they do well, what needs to be improved and have some plans in place to maintain standards and make things better. This includes involving and seeking the views of the people who use the service. We noticed that the AQAA said that nutritional screening/assessments are not currently used at the home. We would expect nutritional screening to be part of the homes assessment and support planning processes, as stated in the National Minimum Standards. However, when we spoke to the manager he told us that they are now doing this and take it very seriously. We have received two notifications from the service since the last key inspection. These notifications and the information in the AQAA suggest that the home notifies us of appropriate events that happen there. There have been no complaints made directly to us since the last inspection and we have not been made aware of any safeguarding incidents. Information provided in the AQAA told us that no complaints have been made directly to the home since the last inspection and confirmed that there have been no safeguarding incidents. All three people who use the service and returned surveys told us that they had someone they could talk to if they were unhappy and that they knew how to make a complaint if they needed to. All four staff who returned surveys said they knew what to do if someone had concerns about the service. The health or social care professional who returned a Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 survey told us that the home usually responded appropriately if some one had any concerns. Three people who use the service completed and returned surveys to us. When we asked if the staff treated them well and listened and acted on what they said, all three people said always. They also said that the home was always fresh and clean and that the could always make decisions about what they did each day. Comments made to us included staff always ask me what I would like to do each day, he goes to the theatre and cinema at the weekends and the staff ask me and help me with this (deciding about what to do each day). Four staff returned surveys. Staff told us that they were recruited thoroughly and safely. Comments made about what the home does well included look after the three service users to a very high standard. There is a good staff team who work very hard and at times are overworked because of the staff shortages and very flexible staff team committed to ensuring clients get excellent quality care, willing to cover shifts as required (without using agency) to ensure continuity of care. Staff also said that a period of better staff stability was needed, especially since this was highlighted as a need in one persons care plan. An anonymous version of the full survey results have been sent to the homes manager for information, so that she is aware of what people think about the home and can make any necessary changes. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by 22nd October 2011. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of people using the service.
