What the care home does well The service continues to offer individuals a high standard of care, delivered in a person centred way. The service puts people at the centre of all it does to enable people to make decisions and choices. People living at Cranworth Close were able to express their concerns, the complaints procedure was robust and easy to access. This ensured people understood how to raise a concern and were listened to. Robust safeguarding procedures protect people living at Cranworth Close. People told us they were happy and looked after well. What the care home could do better: The service continues to offer people excellent outcomes to ensure their needs are met. The manager and staff have worked hard over the last three years to keep the service moving forward, improving outcomes for people and keeping up to date with changes in good practice. Date of last inspection Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 8 Brief description of the care home Cranworth Close is a care home including nursing care of younger adults with learning disabilities. The service can accommodate up to 24 people, 18 of the people using the service can have nursing needs. The accommodation is provided within four houses. There is also a communal building, which consists of the offices and meeting room for parties and activities. There is a levelled area used as a patio, which is well maintained and well used. The home is in a residential area of Rotherham with access to the local community, shops and amenities. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found:
This unannounced random visit was carried out as part of our three year inspection programme. Random means we will look at specific areas, this visit we looked at the services complaints and safeguarding systems. The service had its last key inspection in June 2007, and they achieved a three star excellent rating, which means the outcomes for people living at Cranworth Close were excellent. The quality rating will only change following a key inspection. therefore the rating for this service will stay the same following this random inspection. The site visit was carried out on 27 April 2010 commencing at 11:00 and finished at 13:00. During the visit we talked to four people who lived at Cranworth Close, three members of staff and the manager. We also looked at relevant paperwork. The manager told us, there had been three adult safeguarding investigation over the last year. All had been referred to Rotherham Councils safeguarding team. Correct procedures had been followed to ensure people were safeguarded. Two of the referrals had been investigated by the police, the manager and staff had cooperated fully to assist the investigation, to ensure correct procedures were followed. The two members of staff have subsequently been referred to the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). The third incident was investigated by the manager as it was a staffing issue, the staff member involved was dismissed and a referral has again been made to the ISA. The vigilance of staff ensured the incidents were reported and acted on, this ensured people were protected. Staff we spoke to were all aware of the safeguarding procedures and what to do if an alleged incident occurred. This ensured people were in safe hands at all times. The manager and staff had been developing assessments to look at the Mental Capacity Act (MCA)and Deprivation of Liberty safeguards (DOLs). This was to determine people were not deprived. We looked at some of the assessments that had been completed they were very detailed, easy to follow and clearly outlined the decisions made. This ensured the persons needs were met. Some best interests meeting were held, to determine the best course of action for an individual. To ensure their needs were met, when they lacked capacity to make a decision for themselves. Family members, consultants, Independent Mental Capacity Advocates (IMCA), other professionals and staff had been in involved in the meetings. The decisions made were clearly seen in the persons plan of care, this ensured their needs were met. We looked at safeguarding training, all staff had attended this in the last twelve months, all qualified staff had attended a two day training course on the MCA, the nursing assistants had completed an awareness training on MCA. this ensured staff were kept up to date with changes in legislation to ensure peoples needs were met. Four minor concerns had been raised, from the records kept it was clear to see these had been resolved satisfactorily. The service had also received 13 compliments. This included a letter from a scrutiny panel, who visited the home from Rotherham council, they enjoyed the visit and gave some very positive comments. We spoke to four people who lived at Cranworth close they told us, I like living here, staff are nice. I go out a lot. I like the food. During our visit the interactions between staff and people using the service were very positive and appropriate. Feedback was given to the manager during at at the end of our visit.
