Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received or asked for since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) which was completed by the registered manager. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us from people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection. What has this told us about the service? We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what improvements they need to make. This includes offering more individual activities for people using the service such as shopping trips and implementing a new care planning system to ensure peoples needs continue to be met in their preferred way. The AQAA also told us about the improvements being made to the premises. This includes redecoration and new furniture for communal areas and bedrooms. The manager included details in the AQAA about the action she has taken to comply with the requirements and recommendations made at the last key inspection. She confirmed that regular checks of the management of medication were made and members of staff had received training in first aid in order to ensure that a first aider was always on duty. Four people who use the service completed a survey and all of them indicated that they were satisfied with the standard of care and support they received at Burwood House. These surveys also told us that the home was kept clean and fresh. One person wrote on the survey, Im very happy with the home. Another person commented that the home was caring and friendly. One person considered the home could improve by providing more outings for residents. One member of staff also told us that the home would be better if there were more activities for people using the service. Although surveys were sent to members of staff we have not received any completed ones. However, two members of staff were contacted by telephone. Both of them said there was always enough staff on duty to meet the individual needs of people using the service and they felt supported by the manager. One member of staff said, It feels like being part of a family, we have time to spend getting to know the residents. According to the AQAA no complaints have been made to the manager during the last year. No complaints have have been made directly to the Care Quality Commission Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 about Burwood House since the last key inspection. The people who completed the survey indicated that they knew who to speak to if they were unhappy about anything. The members of staff contacted by telephone knew what to do if a person living at the home or their relatives complained to them. The manager has written in the AQAA that as a result of listening to people using the service they have introduced aromatherapy and baking into the programme of activities. The AQAA provides information about staff training and told us that most of the care workers have National Vocational Qualifications in health and social care at level 2 or above. This confirms that a programme of staff training and development is in place to help maintain and improve the standard of care for people using the service. The members of staff contacted by telephone said they had received the training they needed in order to care for people living at the home in the way they preferred. According to the AQAA there have been several events that the manager should have told the Care Quality Commission about. During a telephone conversation the manager explained that she had not realised this was necessary and would do so in future. However, the manager and staff work well with us and have confirmed that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The Care Quality Commission will continue to monitor information about this service and will carry out an inspection when required.
