Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found:
This random inspection of Calderbank House was completed on 20 May 2010 by one inspector from the Care Quality Commission. Before our visit we sent a self assessment quality assurance form known as an AQAA to the home so that they could tell us how they feel they are doing and what plans they have for the future of the service. The manager completed the form well and returned it to us within the timescale set. We also sent some surveys to people who use the service and staff who work there so that they could tell us how they feel about the service. Five people living in the home and six staff wrote to us with their comments. The information in the AQAA, the results of the surveys and the outcome of our visit tells us that the home is continuing to provide excellent standards of care and support to the people who live at the home. We looked at two care plans and found them both to be detailed and informative. It was easy to find out what support people need and their personal preferences. This means that people get the care and support they need in the way they like it. In the surveys people confirmed that they get the care and support they need. We could also see from the care plans that peoples health care needs are met and people are seeing a range of health care professionals. People have good opportunities to maintain their links with the local community. One person goes out regularly to a club and another to sequence dancing and Tai Chi. In the surveys everyone told us that activities are available. The home grow some of their own vegetables and keep their own hens. One of the people living in the home told us that the produce is used in the home and it is very good. In the surveys everyone told us that the meals are good. The manager is qualified and experienced. All of the staff have a qualification in care, this means they have been assessed as being competent in their role. Staff receive regular training to keep them up to date with best practice. Staff like working at the home and there is a very stable staff team. What the care home does well:
