What the care home does well The home works closely with outside agencies ensuring the best interests of the residents are being met. Residents views are listened to and acted upon. The staff provide a comfortable, clean, homely and pleasant place to live. Visitors are made welcome at any time. The home provides palliative care (care for the dying) so residents have the choice, where possible, to stay at the home rather than in hospital. Several of the staff had worked at the home for a number of years. This helps provide continuity of care to residents by people they know and can trust. What the care home could do better: At the time of the visit there were no requirements or recommendations made. Random inspection report

We, The Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out an unannounced random inspection at Carrington Court on the 18 May 2010. Several weeks before our planned visit, we asked the manager to complete an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment form (AQAA). The AQAA provides us with information about how the home is meeting the needs of the people who live there, and includes plans for further development. To help us gather further information about the service we sent surveys to residents and staff. We received completed surveys from five residents and two members of staff. Residents comments were positive and they indicated that they were happy living at the home. Residents confirmed they had been consulted about moving in to the home and that they were provided with sufficient information about the services and facilities available. When asked about what the home does well at one resident said, The home does everything well and shows respect for the people living there. The management and staff dont just care for us they show compassion and understanding which makes for a happy home and happy residents. Another said, Staff are all lovely, very friendly and approachable. They are not just care workers, they are my friends. Staff comments were also positive about the management of the home and how the home was run. Staff confirmed they receive up to date information about the people they are caring for, that the recruitment process was rigorous and robust and they are given training and updates relevant to their role. One said, We work well as a team, all the staff know what is expected of them and we work to provide a high standard of care. We looked around the home and spoke with residents and staff. We looked at four care plans and these were found to contain detailed information about the individual care residents required. The care plans had been updated monthly as required and any changes had been documented. We looked at the medication systems and spoke with the nurse who had administered the morning medication round. Medicines were safely stored and accounted for. All medicines given had been recorded on the individuals MAR chart (record sheet). The home had some controlled drugs. These were suitably stored in a controlled drugs cabinet and recorded and countersigned in a controlled drugs register. Staff ensure that the residents are treated with respect and their rights to privacy were upheld. It was observed and heard that staff had built up good relationships with residents and there was an exchange of friendly but respectful banter between them. We looked at the complaints file and only one minor concern had been brought to the attention of the manager within the last twelve months. There had been no complaints brought to the attention of the CQC. Information on the AQAA told us there had been no safeguarding referrals or investigations within the last twelve months. On both floors of the home there is a notice board full of complement letters and cards. One message read said, My family and I would like to express our thanks to you all for the excellent care you provided for my dad. The decision of the CQC is that the home is still providing excellent outcomes for those
