This care home is registered to provide personal care and/or continuous nursing care, plus accommodation and meals, in two semi-independent units. One is a dementia care unit for up to 12 people. The other is for up to 42 older people. There is flexibility in how the 54 registered beds may be used. Cedar Lodge is situated in the well-established village of Norton in Stockton-onTees, close to the village centre. All bedrooms are spacious, single rooms, with en suite toilets and wash hand basins. At the last key inspection in March 2009, the weekly fees varied between £420 and £584.80, but the actual amount payable depends on peoples individual circumstances. The fee covers all accommodation, meals and personal care (plus nursing care for those people in receipt of continuous nursing care at the home). Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We examined the homes Annual Quality Assurance Assessment dated 21st January 2010, which is the homes self-assessment of its performance to date. We looked at any comments received from people who use the service or their representatives, including other agencies involved, plus staff from the home. We considered notifications made by the service and sent to us about significant events. We reviewed the findings of the last key inspection carried out on 10th March 2009. What has this told us about the service? Cedar Lodge continues to do well against most of the key National Minimum Standards concerning Older People, in terms of positive outcomes for the people who use the service. Over the past 12 months there have been changes to its categories of registration, in so far as it now specialises in the provision of care services to older people, including dementia care, end of life care and nursing care. It no longer provides a specialist care service for younger adults. People who use the service and their representatives often say that they are happy with the quality of the care and service provided. Typical comments received from people who use the service include: I always receive the care and support I need. Staff always listen and act on what I say. I always get the medical care I need. The home has good professional relationships with external health and social care agencies. The service continues to be well managed, despite the former registered manager (Amanda Hatch) leaving towards the end of 2009 and there are good quality assurance systems in place, with support from external senior managers provided by the Executive Care Group. A new manager, Andy Coults, has been appointed recently and he will be applying to CQC for registration as manager in the near future. The home has an established staff team of nursing and care staff, with some recent additions. Most care staff have not yet gained qualifications in Care at National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) level 2 or above, but many are working towards the award. There are good staff induction and training programmes organised by the home, including dementia awareness. A person-centred approach is taken and both service users and relatives are engaged in regular consultations about their preferences and choices, including menus. They are also invited to become involved in social events and activies that they might be interested in. The home has a friends and family group. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The service is progressing well and its Quality Rating continues to be regarded as excellent. There is no intention to carry out a key inspection of Cedar Lodge before October 2010. However, the service will be subject to continuous monitoring and annual review and may receive an inspection at any time.
