Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all of the information we have received, or asked for since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQQA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQQA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using services. The previous inspection report to see what requirements were made and the results of any other visits we have made to the home in the last 12 months. Information we have about how the home has managed complaints. Relevant information from other organisations. We sent out service user surveys to the home. The manager confirmed that service users had received these, however, none have been returned to us. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us the AQQA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQQA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The manager continues to seek the views of service users through surveys, service user, relative and review meetings, the use of a comments box and out of hours managers surgery. As a result of listening to people the following changes have been made. Relatives meetings have been increased to monthly, the activities programme has been improved, an outside area has been developed for service users to use and a dementia strategy is being introduced. A full needs assessment continues to be completed before any prospective service user moves into the home. Where possible the manager also arranges a day visit to the home so that their needs can be assessed within the care setting. The manager told us that all service users have a plan of care. This is written in discussion with the service users and their relatives. She also told us that all staff who administer medication have had training in relation to this. Medication audits are carried out and if there are any issues identified then action plans for improvement are developed and implemented. There is a designated activities co-ordinator. The manager is working with them to help make sure the activities provided reflect the service users interests and past histories (this is known as a person centred approach to care). All staff are provided with basic awareness training about safeguarding adults during their induction and receive more in-depth training within 3 months of their employment. There has been one safeguarding referral made by the home in the last 12 months. This demonstrates that staff know what should be referred to protect people. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 The manager told us that she has received 4 complaints in the last 12 months. These have all been quickly investigated by her. We have not received any complaints about this home. Improvements to the environment include better signage around the home to assist service users in their surroundings, improvements to the external seated area and an increase in the smoking facilities available to meet the needs of service users. There continues to be a thorough recruitment process. Currently 52 of staff have completed the NVQ level 2 qualification in care. There is also now a moving and handling facilitator in place who holds regular training sessions for staff. A new manager has recently been appointed. She told us that she worked alongside the previous manager in order to ensure a smooth transition into the home. She has applied to become the registered manager. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by the 15th December 2011. However, we could decide to inspect at any time should information be provided that suggests service users are being placed at risk or harm.
