What did we do for this annual service review? The annual service review for Dean Wood Manor Care Home included the following: The annual quality assurance assessment document (AQAA) was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment and a dataset that is filled in once a year by all providers and is one of the main ways we get information from providers about how they are meeting outcomes for people using their service. The AQAA also provides us with statistical information, service trends and patterns in social care. Surveys of people living in the home, relatives and staff. A review of what the service has told us since the last key inspection. A review of the findings of the last key unannounced inspection. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA was originally delayed due to the absence of the manager from the home. She has subsequently left the post and a new manager has been appointed but has not yet taken up the position. The Operations Director requested a new AQAA and returned it promptly and to a good standard. The AQAA showed that the home has various procedures whereby it seeks the views of people living there and their families and gave examples of how their views have changed practices in the areas of, for example, food, activities and decor. The AQAA showed that the home has good procedures for introducing potential users including assessments, brochures and welcome packs. The AQAA showed that the home produces care plans within forty eight hours of the admission of residents and stated that these have been improved and now involve them and their families more frequently in their production and review. It stated that the home has full procedures to ensure that the healthcare of people living there is promoted and also that meals and medicines are delivered in a safe and appropriate manner. The document claimed that the home is active in promoting a homely atmosphere. It stated that specific activities are provided around the stimulation of memory for people living there and that regular activities are provided for the enjoyment of people living there. The document stated that there are regular meetings for people accommodated with families also being invited to share their views. The home, according to the AQAA, has full policies and procedures to protect people living there, including training for staff in safeguarding issues. The policies include our name and address so that full information is available to interested parties. The document strongly stated that the environment is a safe and secure one with a particular person responsible for health and safety matters and environmental risk Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 assessments being undertaken for the protection of people living there. The AQAA stated that the home employs sufficient staff to fulfill its purpose. It stated that full recruitment and selection procedures are in place for the protection of people living there. It also stated that there is a full induction of staff, including shadowing an experienced person, to promote competence. It reported that training, supervision and team meetings are promoted within the home to support and direct staff. The AQAA stated that full management procedures are in place to ensure that the home is run effectively. This included a business plan and a quality assurance system to maintain standards. It committed the home to addressing any recommendations and requirements from reports to promote improvements where necessary. A number of surveys were received from people living in the home, their relatives and staff. They were complimentary about the work of the home. Typical comments were the home has a cheerful and caring approach to all residents, (person living in the home) and my mothers needs are fulfilled and I am quite happy with the care she receives. One staff member did make some criticisms about complaints not being dealt with and some other staff in the home but, otherwise, the surveys were positive about the care being provided. A review of information received since the last inspection showed that in April 2009 Wigan Council expressed a number of concerns about some of the processes within the home. This was responded to fully by the home and there was no subsequent correspondence from Wigan Council to indicate any further concerns. A telephone interview with the Operations Director confirmed that he felt that there was now a positive relationship between the home and the Council and that they are working well together in the interests of people who live in the home. The information received showed that there had been safeguarding matters raised and these have been appropriately managed. The Operations Director confirmed that one matter, concerning the particular behaviour of a person living in the home, still remains under review but he reported that this was being managed between the home and the Council in a positive manner. Other notifications sent to us showed that the home was informing us of incidents as required. A review of the findings of the last key inspection held on 26th February 2009 confirmed that this home was rated a 2 star, good service. All the outcome groups were assessed as being good and there were no requirements resulting from this report. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The annual service review has shown that the home continues to provide a good service to people living there. The Care Quality Commission will continue to monitor information about this service and will carry out an inspection when required. We can inspect the home at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of people using it. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
