What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received, or asked for since the last inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQQA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQQA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. The previous inspection report to see what requirements were made and the results of any other visits we have made to the agency in the last 12 months. Information we have about how the service has managed complaints. Relevant information from other organisations. The results of surveys we sent to service users, staff and other health care professionals. We received 2 completed surveys from service users, 8 from staff and 3 from other health care professionals. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us the AQQA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQQA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service and they know what further improvements they need to make. Since the last inspection the manager has used annual service user surveys, complaints and suggestions to find out what service users and their relatives think about the service. As a result of listening to people the manager told us they have involved service users and their families in redecoration of bedrooms, they have purchased 2 large screen TVs and some new furniture for the home. They have also developed the activities programme. Other improvements to the home have included improving the environment for people with dementia, for example, by providing red toilet seats so people can easily see them, signs so people can easily find their way and a picture menu book to help service users make choices about what to eat. The manager is also doing a course at degree level so that she has greater knowledge of the needs of people with dementia. Staff training in the last 12 months has included Dignity in Care training sessions provided by the local authority safeguarding team. The manager told us that 90 of care staff have achieved the NVQ level 2 qualification in care or above and plans are in place for all staff to undertake malnutrition and Mental Capacity Act training. In the last 12 months the manager has also completed training about the Mental Capacity and Deprivation of Liberty Acts to keep her knowledge up-to-date. We have received one complaint about Benfield Villa. This was about the quality of food, activities and the environment. As a result of this complaint we did a random inspection on 23rd July 2009. Four requirements were made as a result of this inspection. These were to make sure out of date milk is not kept in the fridge on the Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 first floor of the home, for the activities programme to be developed, for vegetables not to be prepared the night before they are cooked and to monitor the temperature in the home to make sure it is kept at a comfortable level for people. The homes line manager wrote to us after this inspection to tell us these requirements had been addressed. The concerns raised in the complaint about the quality of food were not substantiated. Also we were aware, prior to this random inspection, that the home knew about improvements needed to be made to the environment for people who live here. Information provided in the AQQA confirms that these improvements have continued. Service users said : creates a lovely homely atmosphere and staff are all very caring. Helping us all when it is needed. Staff said about Benfield Villa meets the needs of all the residents on a daily basis. Care standards are of a high quality. Choices are given on a daily basis. Furniture could be replaced, provides a homely atmosphere with good care. It feels like home from home Care to residents is excellent. Food is very good and good choice of menu. Good team work, I have worked in care homes before, but must say this one is the friendliest and best run, the home has a lovely atmosphere and the home offers good training to its staff. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by 23rd January 2011. However, we can visit the service at any time if information is provided that suggests service users are at risk of harm or abuse. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
