Donwell House is a purpose built care home situated in the village of Washington Tyne and Wear.It is registered to accomodate up to sixty three people who need nursing,social and personal care and it also cares for people who have a Dementia type illness. There is easy access to the home and there is planty of car parking to the front of the building.There is a pleasant conservatory to the back of the home which leads to a landscaped garden and patio area. There are lounges and dining rooms throughout the home and bathrooms and toilets are easily accessible. All bedrooms have an ensuite facility and access between floors is by stairs and passenger lift.Corridors and doorways are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs and there are plenty aids and equipment for those who need assistance. The home is close to all public amenities and there is a regular bus service which runs to the local shopping area.

What the care home does well Staff showed a good understanding of the needs of the people in their care. People living at the home enjoy a variety of activities and outings. There was a very good standard of record keeping which showed all of the care needs of people living at the home. The care plans were person centred and reflected the needs of the people living at the home. There was evidence of people being encouraged to make decisions and choices in all areas of daily living. All of the people living at the home looked clean and well cared for. People wore clean,matching and appropriate clothes. Complaints and safeguarding issues were properly recorded. These had been reported to the appropriate authorities,including CQC. 4 complaints received had been investigated and resolved. Staff have received training and guidance in the recognition and management of abuse.2 safe guarding incidents had been received by the home and investigated using the local authority`s multi-disciplinary procedures. The provider`s representative has carried out a series of monitoring visits within the home. The provider is required under regulation 26 to produce a report of these monitoring visits. Staffing levels were sufficient to meet the current needs of people living in the home. There are good quality assurance systems in place to audit the quality of care experienced by people living in the home. What the care home could do better: People living in the home should be able to enjoy well set dining tables,with dining linen laundered and ironed appropriately. Lounge chairs should be replaced in the interests of the health and safety of people living at the home. Carpets should be cleaned as required in the interests of health and safety. Dementia training should be up dated as planned to ensure all staff understand the specialist needs of people with memory loss. More effective odour control is required around the home. This unannounced inspection on June 3rd 2010 was carried out to see if the home was still operating at this level. Before the visit we looked at information we received since the last visit to the home. This includes how the service dealt with any complaints and changes to how the home is run. During the visit we talked with people who use the service,some staff and the manager. Following the inspection feedback was given to the person in charge. The manager has been seconded to oversee another home until the end of August, she has been away since March 2010.
