What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received about Eden Cottage care home since the last inspection on 11th December 2008. This information included the homes Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It was completed by the manager of the home. We also asked people who use the service to complete surveys for us. These surveys tell us what it is like for people using this service. We also looked at other information we have about the service. The home has told us about any events that have happened. These are called notifications and it is important that the home keeps us up-to-date on anything that affects the well being of people using the service. Eden Cottage is good at keeping us informed of these events. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service. It was very detailed with clear evidence of how the home has improved since the last key inspection. There have been continued improvements to the redecoration and refurbishment of the accommodation. The manager has told us that the programme of alterations is nearing completion and that the only are left to update is the main lounge. Training for staff continues to improve. Three members of staff have attended End of Life courses. They then cascaded what they had learned to others. All staff are now trained to a minimum of NVQ level 2 in care. One member of staff has recently attended a course on Dementia and dealing with challenging behaviours. A system has been implemented to monitor the standard of personal care provided and the results discussed with staff during one to one sessions. This will help staff know how to care for people in the best way. Unfortunately we did not receive any surveys back from the people who live in the home. However the manager has demonstrated on the AQAA that staff listen to what people tell them and that suggestions are acted upon where possible. An example of this is that the home have adjusted the timings of activities and the variety of food on offer following suggestions from the people who live in the home and visitors. Staff who returned surveys confirmed that they aim to provide a high standard of care and that they feel they have sufficient training and support to enable them to do so. Comments include, The home has a fantastic management team, very homely and comfortable atmosphere and well thought and planned policies. And Provided plenty of activities and entertainment for the residents. There is something on everyday of the week and on a nice day the residents that are able can go on the minibus for a ride Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 out. Surveys returned by health care professionals were also very positive. In response to the question about what the service does well comments include, Excellent standard of personal care given by staff during the day. Peoples dignity and privacy is respected at all times. Entertainment is provided everyday, which residents enjoy. Care staff are friendly and welcoming. Excellent individual care of all the residents, responds to their needs and request advice where appropriate. Good end of life care. When responding to the question about what the service could do better one person commented, Not a lot in my experience. However another indicated that staffing levels could be improved at night. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they continue to improve the service for the people who live at Eden Cottage. In this way they have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 10th December 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people living here. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 5 Reader Information
