Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection, that was completed on the 13 March 2009. This included; The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that is completed by the service and focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service, this was well completed and was provided when requested. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations including Social Services and visiting health care professionals. The registered manager was also contacted by telephone the day before the Annual Service Review for up to date information on the service, and confirmation on how the home had addressed the requirements made at the last key inspection. A visiting social care professional was also contacted for direct feedback on the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. This provided information on the service that included numerical information that was requested. The AQAA was well completed by the registered manager and identified areas that have improved in the last year, and others where further developments are either planned or would benefit residents. The AQAA used to inform this Annual Service Review was dated 2 January 2009. The last key inspection was completed in March 2009 and was positive with regard to resident care, with outcomes for residents being judged in all areas as good. Four requirements were made following this inspection. Contact with the manager confirmed that all these requirements have been actioned, with most being fully addressed. The provision of activities in the home have been discussed with both staff and residents, and now provides a more tailored programme, that is displayed in the home. The care documentation also records individual preferences on activity and entertainment. The manager has reviewed practice in relation to staff protective clothing and infection control, and introduced different apron use. The manager was reminded to ensure all practice in the home is underpinned with a clear procedure. New environmental risk assessments are being introduced and these are to be checked with the Health and Safety Executive to ensure they cover all areas thoroughly. All staff are being provided with appropriate training by staff trained to do so within the home to ensure they handle food safely. The manager advised as the last AQAA recorded, the required safety checks and servicing is completed on all its equipment and services, and that all the required policies and procedures are in place, and are regularly updated. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Discussion with the manager confirmed that all complaints raised with the home are taken seriously, with issues raised being dealt with quickly. Concerns around the care of one resident was raised with social Services and a review of her placement was undertaken. This confirmed that the level of service provided was appropriate to meet her assessed needs. The manager confirmed that the strengths of the home, were based around the size of the home that allowed a continuity of care, with everyone knowing each other well. Staff stability was good with staff turnover being minimal. The staffing arrangements also allow for residents to access a qualified nurse quickly, and to have regular contact with the carers, who could spend quality time with them. Ongoing investment in the home is evident with the replacement of all beds with hydraulic nursing ones being completed, further furniture replacement is planned. Evergreen is a well maintained home that retains a a pleasant attractive environment, although having the necessary equipment to provide nursing care to dependent residents. The information provided by the home confirmed our judgment, that the home continues to provide a good service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? There will be no change to the inspection schedule, and the Care Quality Commission will do a key inspection by 13 March 2011. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
