This inspection was undertaken in one day over a period of five hours. The inspector was accompanied by an Expert by Experience. Experts by Experience are individuals who have personal experience of either living in or supporting a relative in a care environment. In some cases, the Expert by Experience was asked to talk to people and gather their opinions of what it feels like to live in Finch Manor and to observe the interactions between service users and staff. The comments made by the Expert by Experience have been incorporated into this report. The reason for this inspection was to speak with the new manager and to follow up on the last key inspection. Since the last key inspection, the Service User Guide has been reviewed and updated to reflect the changes in the management of the home. Care plans show that these have been improved to ensure that they contain full details regarding the care needs of the service users. Staff have been given training on the care planning process and of the information that is required to be recorded. Service users and relatives spoken to during the inspection all said that they were happy with the care provided and had no concerns. A group of service users were on a trip out to a local pub for lunch, one of a number of trips out that are made. A programme of activities is prepared for service users and details are displayed. A newsletter is being prepared for service users and relatives as an additional form of ensuring that everyone has details of events and news. Service users said that the meals were good and it was evident that a choice of meal was offered. The dining tables would benefit from the provision of a new tablecloths as those seen were in poor condition. The dining tables lacked some condiments, drinks and jugs of water. The manager explained that she was looking to improve the dining experience and was working towards this. The manager has identified improvements that need to be made in the physical environment within the home. Work has already been undertaken to improve some of the lounges and dining rooms and plans are in place for new lounge furniture to be provided which will include settees. A sensory room is also planned. Some of the bathrooms and shower rooms require improvement to ensure that bathing is provided in a pleasant environment. Some of the linens provided were noted to be of poor quality and the manager stated that these will be replaced in due course. It was evident that the issues raised during the inspection had been identified as necessary by the manager who was working to improve the environment for the service users. One relative said that the lounge environment had dramatically improved and was now a very pleasant area. The central courtyard was a pleasant area with flower beds and seating. This area was well
Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 maintained and looked attractive despite the poor weather. The new manager had only been in post for a few weeks at the time of the inspection. A relatives meeting has been held and a new Quality Committed established to identify additional improvements that can be made. A detailed programme of redecoration, refurbishment and improvements has been prepared to enhance service users environment and their lifestyle.
