Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection on 19/02/08 This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was returned to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Responses to any surveys we sent out. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations including those who commission this service on behalf of social services clients. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA was completed on time and stated that the following improvements have been made in the last 12 months: - More skill based activities have been introduced for residents, and better rota planning allows for more one to one activities. - Service users have been encouraged to take a more active part in gardening particularly at the front of the house. - Photographs of actual meals prepared at the home are now used to help residents with their menu selection. - All service users now access aromatherapy. - Craft sessions have been held for residents, and other homes have been invited to join them. - Better arrangements are in place for the administration of medication and the new procedures have been agreed with the learning disability team at The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 - New purchases for the home have included kitchen chairs (following advice from the occupational therapist), new flooring in the bathroom and one bedroom, new blinds for the lounge, and some new furniture. - Better arrangements for recruitment are now in place, which involves service users more fully in the process. It was also noted that the AQAA stated that whilst the majority of policies and procedures have been reviewed within the last year, four have not been reviewed since 2006 and this will need to be remedied. A selection of surveys was sent out to prior to this inspection, and six were returned to the Commission. Two of the service users were able to complete the surveys with help from staff, but were unable to answer all of the questions. The questions they were able to answer showed that they thought staff treated them well, and that they could choose what they did in relation to activities. They also said the home was fresh and clean. One of the two did not know how to make a complaint, or who to speak with if they were unhappy. This will need to be addressed by the home. Two staff returned surveys and they confirmed that they had had proper recruitment checks, had an induction which covered everything they needed to know, and had regular support from their manager. Both had positive comments to add, including: Staff are kept well informed of service users needs, and the working environment is very good. Two surveys were returned from health care professionals who know the home and its residents. Both ticked that assessment arrangements Always worked well, and that peoples social and health care needs were properly monitored, reviewed and met. One added that during visits to the home there was Always a warm and caring environment. The service has eleven permanent care staff and the AQAA states that eight staff have at least an NVQ Level 2; this exceeds the National Minimum Standard recommendation that at least 50 of staff should hold this qualification. The AQAA states there have been no complaints, and none have been made to the Commission in the last 12 months. There have been two safeguarding adults referrals made in relation to this service in the last 12 months and these have now been satisfactorily concluded. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will carry out a Key Inspection by 19/02/2011.
