What the care home does well The atmosphere at the home was warm and welcoming. Staff were smart and professional in their appearance. The majority of people were in the lounge where there was suitable music playing quietly at one end while a quiz was underway at the other end of the room. People were engaged in the activity and seemed to be enjoying the interaction. People wrote in our surveys about what the home does well: "My Mother xxxx is a residents at the home and gets excellent care." "Meals, entertainment. The staff take good care of me." Staff made the following comments in surveys: "I think that Hollybank home always looks after the residents needs really well and at Hollybank we always try to encourage the residents to remain independent." "We work really well as a team and look after the residents well. It is a good place to work and we do lots of training so we are more qualified and experienced in the role." What the care home could do better: The manager should continue to make sure that people are looked after appropriately and keep us informed of any events or incidents as required. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: - The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. - Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. - What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. - The previous key inspection of 22nd June 2009, annual service reviews and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. - Relevant information from other organisations. - What other people have told us about the service. We sent out a number of surveys before the inspection, to people using the service, their relatives, staff and other healthcare professionals. Comments we have received appear in the body of the report. This was an unannounced visit carried out by two inspectors who were at the home from 10:00 until 11:00 on 12th May 2010. The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear, detailed and gave us all the information we asked for. We spoke with two members of staff; looked at accident reports; one set of care records and observed interactions between staff and people living at the home. Staff said: Good home because people get to keep some independance but have help when they need it. They get the right help from outside and the right aids. People can make choices. People are definitely well looked after. Everyone seems happy. Personal care is definitely good, people decide when to have a bath, it depends what they want, some have one daily, others twice a week. We looked at accident reports and found that not all incidents and accidents are being reported to us as they are required to be. For example, one person had had a fall which resulted in the ambulance being called, we had not been made aware of this. The manager arrived at the service and during the visit shared information about the future of the service. We were satisfied that that people are safe at the home with good staffing levels and the manager told us that there was plenty of provisions.
