What the care home does well The staff team have improved the variety of social activities and day care opportunities for the people living in the home. The service has improved its use of pictures and symbols to increase choice and aid communication with the people living in the home. The service provides a comfortable and homely environment which is clean and well maintained. What the care home could do better: No specific areas requiring improvement were identified during this visit but it isrecommended that due to the amount of lone working that is undertaken, and the fact that the manager is covering another two services, that some additional checks could be carried by the management in the evenings. It would be also be good practice to check whether staff require any additional support whilst working on their own. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: This unannounced random inspection was undertaken 14/05/2010 and lasted for approximately 2 hours. Both service users were out at the time of this visit, one having gone to stay with relatives for the weekend and one was out at a day centre placement, which they attend for two days every week. One member of staff was on duty and the registered manager, who is also registered for another service run by the same Provider, was contacted and attended the inspection. There have been no admissions since the last inspection and the home currently still only has two service users. The care plans for these people were up to date and had been recently been reviewed, all info was being securely stored. There has been some increase in the vocational activities and also the social outings that are supported by the staff team. Though with only two people living in the home there are still some limitations due to the staffing levels. However the Manager confirmed that additional staffing can be brought in if extra one to one activities are organized. The Statement of Purpose and Service User Guide have both been reviewed and updated. The service is visited regularly by the manager but the day to day running is being done by an experienced senior member of staff. This person has also been undertaking staff supervisions and the staff team have been having joint meetings with the staff team based in the other home run by the same Provider. This is practical short term solution until the home is more fully occupied and has a larger permanent staff team. All the staff records have now been updated and there was current staff list in place. All information was being securely stored. The home is being staffed by a group of mainly bank staff but these are all regular workers at the home, and the senior staff member is key working both service users. The most recent staff appointments were checked and these records showed that the necessary recruitment checks had been completed. The Registered Manager continues to supervise this service and also two others run by the same Provider. He calls in most days to check things and is also on call. There is also an on call rota in place for staff to use if necessary. All the requirements made at the last key inspection had been actioned apart the requirement to develop a quality assurance process. The home was clean, well maintained and hygienic throughout at the time of this inspection What the care home does well: What they could do better: No specific areas requiring improvement were identified during this visit but it is Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 8 recommended that due to the amount of lone working that is undertaken, and the fact that the manager is covering another two services, that some additional checks could be carried by the management in the evenings.
