What did we do for this annual service review? The manager and provider completed an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment. (AQAA) In this document they told us what the service did well, how the service had improved in the last 12 months and what plans were in place to improve over the next 12 months. We looked at information received from the home and other agencies since the last inspection. We received nine surveys from people using the service, six relatives, six staff and one professional visitor to the home. Their comments are included in the next section of this review. As well as the above we completed a risk assessment of this service, to ensure we have enough information about the service to determine the quality rating has not changed in the last 12 months. What has this told us about the service? The manager sent the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. The information was comprehensive and provided evidence that they value the views of people who use the service. People using the service told us. They were given enough information about the home and that they received the support they needed. Staff were usually available when people needed them and listened and acted on what people said. Staff always made sure people got the medical care they needed and arranged activities that they could take part in. people using the service liked the meals that were provided. They knew how to make a complaint and had someone to talk to if they were not happy. The majority told us the home was fresh and clean. People using the service made the following comments. Caring staff. Good food. Friendly caring staff. Generally the whole system works well. The staff are kind and helpful. I dont think it could do much better. Personal care is very good, the staff are well trained and caring. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 8 When they have time they will stay and talk. There are no trips out and about. I realise this creates staffing difficulties and not everyone would take advantage of this. But I have heard of other homes who take people out occasionally. We contacted the home to ask the manager and the provider about the above comment. We were told nine people had been out for Christmas lunch, individuals had been taken out by staff members and many people were taken out regularly by their families. The provider told us that they will arrange for the activities worker to check with people again to make sure anyone who wishes to go out has this opportunity. My room sometimes smells of urine. We contacted the home about the above comment. We were told carpets were shampooed regularly, where odours were identified odour neutralisers were used and that odours in the home were not generally a problem. I feel happy and contented here. All of the carers are friendly and helpful when I need help. The home is very caring in every way. I cannot think of anything it can improve on. All is well. The carers treat us well. I appreciate being helped to go to bed and to have a bath. I like my room and having my own TV. The staff bear in mind and have been very helpful with the results of a bad fall I had. I like the gardens and being able to see them from the window. Relatives told us. There was enough information provided about the home and the care service was able to meet peoples needs. Staff supported people to keep in touch with relatives if they wished and relatives were kept up to date about peoples condition. Relatives said the care home provided the care and support they expected and agreed to at the time of admission. They said staff always had the right skills and experience to look after people properly. They said staff supported people to live the life they chose. They were given information about how to make a complaint and added, complaints were handled appropriately. Relatives also made the following comments. Overall care and attention given to my mother has been exceptional at all times. She has been in residence for eight years and is happy and content. I know that I can call the staff at any time if I have any concerns and they have always responded quickly and efficiently.
Annual Service Review Page 5 of 8 This is a great residential home, it does not feel like an institution. It is clean and not at all smelly. The garden room is lovely to sit in. Above all the staff are excellent. They respect the concerns and wishes of residents and encourage them to be as autonomous as possible. I think the call system could be modernised but on the whole it does work OK. After a fall the staff have been wonderful in helping my father recuperate. I love this place!. There is high quality leadership committed and warmth. The staff seem content and enjoy their work. Its wonderful that bank staff are not used. When we raised an issue, this was heard in a non defensive way and was dealt with appropriately. The actual building and its layout can restrict social contact between residents to some degree. In an ideal world the building would be more suitable, but this does not matter given the care is so good. Perfectly run care home. My Mother is being looked after to the highest standard. We as a family are so pleased that mother is being cared for in this excellent home. Staff told us that checks were carried out on them before they started work at the home. Staff received an induction which covered everything they needed to know before they started work. They said the manager gave them enough support and met with them to discuss how they were working. They said there was usually enough staff on duty to meet peoples needs. staff had enough support, experience and knowledge to meet the different needs of people who lived at the home. Staff also made the following comments. We provide care dignity and respect to all residents. An excellent choice in diet, very accommodating and excellent activities. This is a lovely home to work in I would recommend it. There is a very friendly environment. The residents are always well looked after. Two staff members said we could do with more staff, this would allow us to spend more time with the residents. Friendly place to work, it caters for the individual rather than a group of people. The home is less like an institution than other homes I have worked in. One member of staff told us we have no mandatory training. In the AQAA the manager and provider told us that care workers complete an orientation /induction programme, regardless of previous experience or qualification. New recruits to care
Annual Service Review Page 6 of 8 complete an induction programme to national induction standards. This meant staff had the training they needed to do their job. The manager also told us 70 care staff were trained to NVQ level 2 or above and plans for a further care worker to commence NVQ 3 was in place. We received one survey from a professional visitor to the home. They told us that the home provided a caring environment. My patients receive excellent care from the staff at the home. In summary the manager told us the following improvements had been made in the last 12 months. The issues raised during the last inspection had been addressed. A new brochure had been produced which gave a clearer impression of the service and training records had been updated. There are Improvement in the number of care staff with National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) 2 in care. Over 70 . There were Improvements to the environment with seating, decoration, and carpeting. The home has appointed a leisure activities co-coordinator with subsequent enormous improvement in this aspect of the service. We looked at the information in the AQAA. Our judgement is that the home continues to provide a good service. They know what further action they need to take to improve the service further. The home continues to let us know about the things that have happened since the last key inspection. They have shown that they managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that the service provides good outcomes for people who use it. There was evidence to indicate that the home was continuing to improve and providing some excellent outcomes for people. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The last key inspection was carried out on the 12/12/07. It is our Statutory responsibility to inspect at least once every 3 years. The completion of the risk assessment and annual service review has not changed our view of the quality rating of this service. Therefore we are not planning to inspect this service before 01/12/10. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
