What the care home does well The manager undertakes a thorough pre-admission assessment and obtains assessments from other professionals involved in the person`s current care. The care plans are person centred and are reviewed frequently and would give nursing and care staff detailed information about the service user and how their care needs should be met. Residents and relatives described the staff group as friendly and relationships between staff and residents were observed to be relaxed and informal. Daily routines in the home are flexible and residents are encouraged to make choices and have autonomy over their lives and how they wish to undertake their activities of daily living. The home provides a wide variety of activities for service user to participate. The activities are tailored around the residents` needs and preferences and their voice is listened to and acted upon. The home is open and inclusive and hold regular residents and relatives forums and staff meetings at which time issues and suggestions can be put forward. Residents were complimentary about the food that the home provides. The menus demonstrated that a varied nutritious diet it provided with attention to those who have special dietary needs. The home and environment is well maintained and very clean with all areas accessible. The home is in the process of having an extension built, but this does not impinge on current service users` space. Residents voiced their satisfaction with their accommodation and most had made their personal space individual with pictures and personal belongings. Surveys returned to CQC indicated a high level of satisfaction with the service and care provided and comments made said: `The home does everything well and I am very happy there is nothing they could do better`. `I enjoy our Friday night club`. `There is nothing the home could do to make it better I am quite happy`. `Activities are useful`. `I have everything I need to date. Thelighting levels seem low to me`. Service users and staff have confidence in the effectiveness of the home`s manager. Systems and procedures in the home worked well including the management of medication, dealing with complaints, staff recruitment, quality monitoring, and health and safety. The recruitement process is robust and all appropriate checks and records are maintained in personnel files. There is a strong commitment to staff training and development to ensure that staff are able to fulfil their roles and responsibilities and meet residents needs. Comments received from staff include. `The home gives good care to every resident and the home supports and help the staff`. `The home listens to residents` and staff problems and sorts them out straight away`. `We care for individuals as individuals`. `There are such a lot of activities on offer and we love it`. `The manager does listen to the problems we face while giving care to the service users and will send us for appropriate training`. `I am very happy working at the home`. `The home provides a good range of activities for residents to be involved in if they wish`. `The home does well to provide the range of activities. We should encourage the residents to participate in them more and be more aware of what residents are able to do`. What the care home could do better: The manager must ensure that the records of complaints and the action taken and the outcome of the complaint be documented in more detail. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This unannounced visit to Langdale Nursing Home took place on the 5th May 2010.The visit was undertaken as a random inspection and was a short, focused inspection of the service to measure the service against the key national minimum standards. The provider had returned the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment to the CQC, which had been completed comprehensively and the focus of this visit to the home was to support the information stated in this document and other information received by the CQC since the last fieldwork visit made to the home in May 2007. The inspector was assisted throughout the visit by the registered manager, Mrs. Rebecca McBride Surveys had been distributed to service users and staff by CQC. Eight service users surveys, some of which has been completed by relatives and seven staff surveys were returned to CQC. The outcome from these indicated that the service users are receiving a good standard of care in a pleasant environment and that staff have a wide variety of training available to them and feel valued in their role by the management team. At the time of this visit the home was accommodating 29 residents.
