What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection in October 2008. This included: * The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was completed and sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for those people who use the service. * Feedback surveys returned to us by those using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. * Information we have about how the home manages any complaints. * What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. * The previous key inspection report. * Relevant information from other organisations. * What people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The service was sent their annual quality assurance assessment on the 14 August 2009 and asked to complete and return it to us by the 11 September 2009. A completed document was received as requested. The last key inspection carried out at the home was on the 10 October 2008. The outcome rating made following our inspection was that the service was providing a good standard of care for people at the home, awarding 2 stars. Langfield Care Centre is part of the Southern Cross Care Group. Nursing care is provided. Placements are made by the local authority or through private arrangement. People are accommodated on both a permanent and short term basis. Comprehensive information was provided on the AQAA with regards to what the service provides, what improvements have been made over the last year and what further improvements they would like to make over the forthcoming year. Langfield has close working relationships with the community nursing teams and have been accepted to complete The Gold Standard Framework in relation to end of life care. One of the homes nurses represents the home at the Palliative Care Link meetings. The manager confirmed on the AQAA that all relevant recruitment checks are undertaken prior to people commencing employment. Further information is accessed Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 with regards to the nursing staff in relation to their professional registration. Quality monitoring systems are in place. Monitoring visits are undertaken by the Operations Manager on a monthly basis, which involve auditing the service as well as speaking with staff, visitors and people who live at the home. Any action identified is then detailed in an action plan with timescales for completion. Further audits are also completed internally with regards to the care provision, staff recruitment and training and health and safety ensuring people are kept safe. A staff training matrix is held detailing what areas of training and development are needed by the team. Training is accessed through the local authority and internally. Currently 81 of the staff team have completed NVQs at level 2 and/or 3. Mandatory courses are also undertaken as well as safeguarding Information provided on the AQAA showed that there have been no complaints raised with the home. However 2 safeguarding issues have been referred to the local authority in line with Rochdales safeguarding procedure. Opportunities are made available for residents and relatives to discuss issues in relation to the home. The manager holds weekly surgeries enabling people to speak with her in private and relatives meetings also take place on a quarterly basis. As part of the review we also send out feedback surveys to people living at the home, relatives and staff. We received 7 from people living at the home and their relatives and 9 from staff. Comments included; it provides a safe, caring atmosphere, it responds well to any queries raised, the home is always clean and comfortable and communication is excellent and the staff are very friendly. Staff expressed; I think the home does well, individual care needs are met, promotes independence and the meals are excellent. People felt that improvements could be made with regards to the choice of activities, particularly for those people with additional needs. The manager has identified on the AQAA that since our last inspection an activity worker has been recruited. This area should be explored. Our judgment is that the service still provides a good service for the people who receive support. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The Care Quality Commission will continue to monitor information about this service and will carry out an inspection when required. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
