Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last annual service review. This included, The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Three surveys were returned to us by people using the service and one survey from members of staff working for the service and one from a social health care professional. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. This includes any safeguarding adult work including referrals and joint working. The previous key inspection, previous Annual Service review and any other visits we have made to the service. Information provided by the registered manager and responsible individual. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us the information we asked for. We carried out a key inspection of the service on 5 October 2007 and the judgement was that the service provided a two star good service. We carried out an Annual Service Review on 20th October 2008 and made the judgement that the service continued to provide good outcomes for the people it supports. We looked at the information in the AQAA and considered other information we had received . Our judgement is that the outcomes remain good for people who use the service. The AQAA informs us that the manager has continued to improve the service by having reviewed activities for service users and enabling them to attend more age and ability appropriate sessions. There is more opportunity for service users to use the public swimming pool to aid mobility and individual shopping trips to purchase personal items. The environment at Larchpine is being improved all the time and since the last review new carpets have been fitted and the kitchen has been updated to enable more flexible use by the service users.Externally there are improvements to the garden area with an extension to the patio area to aid greater wheelchair access. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Health care needs needs continue to be met and there is additional use of a physiotherapist and aromatherapist to support service users. Additional equipment had been obtained for service users such as specialist boots ,a wheelchair and an epilepsy helmet to enable service user independence and to keep them safe .Support plans are being reviewed to ensure they are more person centred and include details regarding Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and the Mental Capacity Act. Ten of the twelve staff have attained a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Care which means they may have enhanced skills and knowledge which may provide an increased quality of care. The manager has attained an NVQ level 4 and the Registered Managers award. The current manager has been in post for over a year and now needs to make an application to be considered for the role as registered manager. Comment cards we received back contained positive comments. Responses to the questions what does the service do well? included food, going out, caring home and lovely staff and residents,we have plenty of activities for all our service users, listen and do their best to meet service users needs. In response to the question what could the service do better there were only two responses which were Work more together as a teamand ten rather than twelve hour shifts would be better ,as would two days on rather than three. We could see from the AQAA that there is now a permanent team in place and more work is being carried out to identify individuals talents and strengths of care staff so they will feel more valued at work. A log is maintained of all comments made and information regarding how to raise issues is produced in different formats to assist people who use the service to raise any issues or make their opinions known. Complaints that have been made have been responded to within agreed timescales and a new service user guide is being developed in easy read format to enable service users to be clear on the services at the home. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have been taking action to change working practises to minimise risk to service users and move the service forward. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 5th October 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
