This means that people who use this service experience good outcomes. This visit to Leycester House was unannounced. It took place over one day, taking three and a half hours in total and was done by one inspector. This report will say we when referring to our activities and findings, as it is written on behalf of the Care Quality Commission. The purpose of our visit was to check that the needs and expectations of the people who use the service continue to be met so they experience good outcomes. Our visit was just one part of the inspection. Before the visit took place we asked the manager to complete a questionnaire that we call an annual quality assurance assessment or AQAA for short. It gives us information about how the home is meeting the needs of the people who live there and includes plans for future development. Survey questionnaires were made available for the people who live at the home, and their views have been taken into account. We looked at the information that we already had about the home and this, with the information from the AQAA. helped us to form our inspection plan. Health and personal care. We spoke with eight of the people who lived at Leycester House and we looked at the care records for two people to see how their health and personal care needs were being met. The home had a very positive atmosphere. It was warm, welcoming and sociable and the premises were clean and fresh throughout. The people who lived at the home were relaxed and confident and enjoyed good relationships with staff. We were impressed with the staff and they way they conducted themselves. They were welcoming, helpful and confident in their abilities so they were able to carry out their work with sensitivity and skill. All the staff spoken with had a good working knowledge of the needs and personal preferences of the people who lived at the home so they knew how to meet each persons individual needs and ensure their wellbeing. We could see that people had choice and control over their lives and the principles of dignity and privacy were promoted so they felt they were respected and valued. All the people we spoke with praised the home, staff, standard of care and facilities and services provided. For example two people who were sat together told us that everything was good, so they were content. They told us that the care is good and the food is always good, there is always enough staff and they are kind and caring and the accommodation is good too. When asked to describe the home overall they both said the home and the care is excellent. Each person had a care plan which had been developed with them and signed by them or someone close to them to show that they agreed with it. Care plans had been improved since our last inspection with more information about the persons abilities and personal Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 9 preferences so their independence was promoted and they received care in the way they wanted and preferred. Personal health care needs including specialist health, nursing and dietary requirements were recorded in each persons care plan and provided an overview of their health care needs and acted as an indicator in health requirements. Records showed that staff worked closely with each individual and their health and social care advisors to make sure their health and social care needs were met. The people who lived at the home were supported to take control of their own medicines if they were able. If they prefered, or lacked capacity, senior staff managed their medicines for them. We checked the records and could see that people received their medicines as their doctor had prescribed them so their health care needs were met. There were no recording errors with the exception of one minor mistake and accurate records were kept of all loose medicines so the manager was able to make effective medicines audits. Training records showed that all staff involved in managing and administering medicines were appropriatey trained and had their competency assessed at regular intervals. This showed us that the people who lived at the home were in safe and competent hands. Complaints and protection. The home has a complaints procedure that provides clear guidance on how to make a complaint. This should be made available in large print so it is easier to read. Records showed that the home had received two complaints in the 12 months before our visit. Both complaints had been recorded and acted upon appropriately. The manager demonstrated that she had a positive attitude toward receiving and addressing complaints so people can be confident that they will be listened to and their concerns will be taken seriously and acted upon. Staff are trained on safeguarding and have access to policies and procedures which give them clear guidance so they know what to do if they have any evidence or suspicion of abuse. The local authoritys safeguarding procedures are also available so staff and the people who live at Leycester House can see this information should the need arise What the care home does well: What they could do better: There are no recommendations or requirements from this inspection.
