Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included. The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that we sent to the provider and which was returned by the agreed date. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. How any safeguarding adult alerts has been managed. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The manager stated that as a new facility the home have been concentrating on establishing company standards with existing and new staff. This has led to changes and developments with some of the documentation in the home. The home have now appointed a deputy manager and are at the stage where staff are more established and have completed basic training and can concentrate on their further development. Improvements have been made to the service user guide and also pre admission documentation. No one is admitted to the home unless a full assessment of needs has been completed and this ensures that only peoples needs who can be met are offered a place in the home. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 Upon admission each service user has a comprehensive written plan of care and this sets out in detail how people are to be supported by staff. The manager confirmed that care planning documentation has continued to improve and that staff have become more comfortable at using the documentation in place. The home have appointed a full time activities coordinator who is supported by the staff to ensure that a full and varied activities programme is arranged for the service users. The manager confirmed that comprehensive activity records, written and photographic, discussion with service user and families confirm that they are successful in this area. The home also arrange regular church services from a local pastor, and a priest visits regularly to give communion. Improvements that have been made in the last 12 months are the development of a safe enclosed garden area for the residents in the grounds. And the appointment of the activities co-coordinator has ensured that activities have improved and continue to be developed. The manager has indicated that future improvements particularly when the homes occupancy level increases are to employ a second activities co-coordinator to work part time. The homes menus are currently under review and being trialled at a sister home. And the manager is looking at how meal services can be improved for example serving main meal at night. Robust recruitment procedures are in place and this ensures that only persons who are suitable to work with vulnerable people are employed. Staff receive training that is appropriate to their work and this includes safeguarding adults training. The manager has confirmed that comprehensive policies and procedures re abuse and finances are in place in order to ensure that service users are protected from harm. Safeguarding and Whistle blowing policies have been reviewed and brought into line with county council policies. And safeguarding has been introduced in staff meetings as a permanent part of the agenda and also on development supervisions to ensure staff awareness is kept raised. The manager has also confirmed that the training programme is more comprehensive following the appointment of a training manager. And this ensures the correct training courses are sourced and offered to staff. The home has also built up links with colleagues in other areas of expertise who have Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 brought training sessions into the home for staff e.g. continence adviser, diabetes nurse, tissue viability and infection control. And this to has assisted in raising staff awareness and increasing their knowledge. We received 12 completed surveys for the 15 we issued from people who live in the home and the following comments were made. The home is lovely Staff do everything for you I cannot think of a better place to live There is a nice atmosphere and staff are very caring Evening meals could be better, too many sandwiches Overall people confirmed that they were satisfied with the care in the home. We have received no complaints about the service and there are currently no safeguarding matters being dealt with. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 20th November 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
