What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The manager said in the returned AQAA that the people living at the home have very varied and active lives, they all attend day centres/college through the day, one has a part time gardening job one day a week. At weekends and evenings they use the local and community facilities. The home have a minibus which enables the people living at the home to go shopping, visit pubs and restaurants, cinema and theaters, bowling and sports centres. All the people at the home have maintained strong links with their families, five of them spend alternate weekends with their families. Health care visits are recorded in peoples files, medication records are completed correctly. The people at the home have regular access to GPs, consultants, dentist, physiotherapist, chiropodist, and nurses. Within the last 12 months two bedrooms have been completely redecorated with new carpets, furniture and furnishings. The people living there were actively involved in the planning and in the choosing of the colour scheme and the purchasing of the new Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 furnishings. Two new leather sofas were bought for the lounge so that they had more seating available for the people living there. The courtyard area at the rear of the house has been redesigned and new garden furniture purchased. A tumble dryer was installed in the laundry and a fire door installed in the cellar on the recommendations of the Fire Service. One of the managers has completed NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) level 4 care and the Registered Managers Award. They have expanded the staff team and can now offer people more choices and opportunities. Comments from people living at the home and/or their relatives on what they think about the home included the following: When I am at Mineral Cottage at weekends I am always taken out either to the cinema, shopping, bowling or just for a meal. I enjoy living at mineral Cottage. The staff are really nice and friendly. I also enjoy the meals here. I am very happy living at Mineral Cottage. I have made friends, I go to my mum and dad every two weeks for the weekend and I look forward to this. Comments on what the home could do better included: From a mothers aspect they could attend to personal needs a little better, nothing really vital, but little things like teeth cleaning and face cream, could be done a little more often. I would like to try an evening club. This has been discussed and they are looking into it for me. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that the service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
