We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. Since the last inspection, the home has made a number of improvements as a result of suggestions from the people who use the service. Examples are: After a series of meetings with people living in the home and taking the opportunity to talk with relatives they have made some major changes to staffing changes. Staff levels have increased on laundry, care, and within the kitchen additional cook hours were recruited. Breakfast is now served from 8.00am, people are given the choice to eat in the dining room or continue with trays in their room some people choose trays others preferred go to dining room. Breakfast is served in the dining room from 8.15am to 9.30am this gives people time to get up and about without having to rush. They have made some significant changes to the menu introducing different meals for people to try. The manager said in the AQAA that all staff have participated enthusiastically in various training as well as the mandatory topics. For example training in Dementia Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 Awareness, Administration of Medication, Healthy Eating, and Palliative Care. An up to date brochure of the facilities was introduced and made available to prospective people, relatives and Social Workers. The Personalised Care documentation has been totally updated and is now user friendly and comprehensive. She said this was noted and complimented on once again by Leeds City Council (LCC) Annual Reviews of their clients/service users in October 2009. Photographs of people and a permission sheet, are included with care plans, medication sheets and all other documentation. Flexible routines are in place regarding personal care, individual rights and choice. She also said there is more variety in staff training with more staff working to NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) Level 2 & 3 in Health and Social care. Thermostatic mixing valves have been extended to all hot water outlets. Replacement dining chairs and carpets have been received these were chosen in consultation with the people living in the home. Comments from people living at the home and/or their relatives on what they think about the home included the following: As a relative staff are always welcoming, what ever time I choose to visit. They smile and appear to enjoy their work, always offered a cup of tea. There is a number of activities available and they seem to have a good balance. We are always invited to social events and kept informed of health issues. I have no concerns, the home should carry on as it is. The place is always fresh, clean and tidy. The staff are friendly and helpful. My dad has only been at Neville House for several weeks and he is very content. I have to say everything I have observed at the home has been most positive and I really dont think they could do any better. Comments on what the home could do better included: Only problem in the laundry, underwear is constantly lost even though clearly marked. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last Key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that the service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 We are not going to change our inspection plan. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
