What did we do for this annual service review? The last key inspection for this service was carried out on the 5th June 2008. We looked at all the information that we have received or asked for since the last key inspection of the home. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQQA) that was sent out to us by the service. The AQQA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and any results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their quality assurance assessment (AQQA) when we asked for it. It was very clear and contained information that we asked for in a very detailed way. We also received surveys back from eight people who are residing at the home, fourteen staff and one health care professional. Information provided in the surveys was very positive about all aspects of the service. We have decided, on consideration of all the information that we have received about the home, that it is continuing to provide a good standard of service and that further improvements have been made during the last twelve months. People living in the home told us that, they are able to make choices about how they spend their time, that staff treat them well, they are listened to and their views and opinions acted upon. People all said they knew how to make a complaint and felt any concerns would be taken seriously. Some of the comments received in the surveys included: They CARE! In all senses, the carers are concerned, alert, willing and understanding. They deliver a high standard of care- both physical and psychological Takes very good care of my husband Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 The home is very comfortable and clean and they provide for all my needs. Other information provided in the AQQA document includes In a recent review surgery held within the home by North Lincolnshire Council, we were thrilled to be assessed as excellent in 6 of the 7 areas on which we are judged and receiving a good standard for the 7th area. The excellent rating was achieved for areas such as healthy, independent, safe, respected, and involved. Staff surveys were also very positive in relation to the services that are available and provided at the home. One member of staff stated Nicholas House provides all care and needs for all our residents. We have a home from home here, which makes everyone feel comfortable. The kitchen supplies home cooked food everyday which is of a very good standard. Another said The home gives an extremely good service and always strives to improve on any concerns that may arise.Other comments include we all work as a team, the management support us to provide the very best care, we have lots of training. All the staff surveys supported the other evidence that they are provided with the right training and supervision to make sure that they have the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to care for the people that they help to look after. Information in the AQQA confirmed that further improvements have been made during the last twelve months, for example most of the home has been redecorated and and an extension has been added to provide additional bedrooms and a garden room. Improvements have also been made to the standard of record keeping, activity programmes and range of staff training courses. The quality assurance programme in the home is well developed and demonstrates that people who use the service and their representatives are well consulted and have opportunities to affect aspects of the way the home is run. The home has received one complaint in the last 12 months which was unfounded. There have been no safeguarding issues in the last twelve months. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key visit by the 3rd June 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have any concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
