Annual Service Review Page 2 of 5 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The service sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was very clear and and been thoroughly completed. This gave us all the information we asked for in detail. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and they continue to identify ways to further enhance their service. The home also told us of other improvements they have made since our last review of the service. We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. We also looked at the previous key inspection and relevant information from other organisations. We have not received any information about this service that gives cause for concern and would make us think that the current quality rating is not accurate. The quality rating for this service is 2* star. This means the people who use this service experience good quality outcomes. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues that have arisen. The service states that it has improved the services available to people that use the service. This included involving the support of outside agencies and associations such as the blind society, the Stroke association and the Scunthorpe Museum and Library. The AQAA identified that the service had developed a booklet on Promoting Equal opportunities and Valuing Diversity. The staff also receive this booklet and are challenged on their understanding of the policy and the issues that may arise for people that use the service. This helps to support the diversity of the people living at the home. The care staff also receive training in relation to equal opportunities and the service has an equalities action plan. The management state that Norwood House have developed more comprehensive person centered care plans. This covers areas such as daily living, mobility, risk factors, religion and hobbies. This means that people will have their needs supported in ways that are safe and acceptable to them. Some improvements have been made to the environment since the last inspection. This included privacy locks being placed on all bedroom doors at Norwood House and the communal areas have been decorated. Unoccupied rooms have been refurbished and the service plans to decorate two bedrooms per month until they have all been completed. The conservatory has been refurbished with new blinds fitted. This was previously an area of concern in earlier reports due to the poor condition of the conservatory. A recent inspection from the local Social Service department scored Norwood as Good or Excellent in all seven areas that they were inspected on. This inspection was carried out over a three day period. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 The AQAA states that fencing has been placed to prevent residents walking on a uneven section of the patio. This was also an ongoing concern for the Commission. Since the last inspection of the service there have been changes made to the management of the home.some changes in management. This includes a new manager for the home and a new area ,manager. The new manager has experience in working with people that have dementia care needs. The AQAA states that the manager of Norwood House previously worked for the Alzheimers society across England and Northern Ireland. The homes manager is currently working cowards the Registered Managers Award and an application has been completed to be considered as a fit person to manage the service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by 18th September 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
