Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: One inspector visited Oaklands Nursing Home on 20 May 2010 to check that the home continues to maintain standards in relation to Health and Personal Care and Complaints and Protection. The home is very well maintained so that it provides safe and comfortable surroundings for people to live in. During our visit we heard a public address system that could be heard throughout the building being used to call staff. We also saw that there was a one way mirror situated between the nurses station and the lounge. Consideration needs to be given as to whether these are necessary, as both of them impact on the privacy of the people who live at Oaklands. We looked at two care plans and saw that the persons needs were being monitored so they get the support they need from staff and any equipment needed provided to ensure they maintain their safety. We spoke with two relatives during our visit who were very complimentary about the care and support their relative got from staff in the home. The home has policies and procedures for medication administration and medicines are given by qualified nursing staff on duty, so that they have the correct qualifications and skills to do this safely. We observed staff reassuring people when they needed to be moved and when they were confused or agitated. We saw that do not disturb signs were available for the bedroom doors for when people wanted or needed privacy, or for when they were being helped with their personal care. Staff spoke gently and kindly with people and offered them the necessary support whilst maintaining peoples dignity. One person living in the home told us that staff were lovely. There are good relationships with other health professionals visiting the home so that everyone is working in the best interests of the people living there. We saw that the home has a formal complaints procedure and we were told that they have not received any complaints. No complaints about the home had been raised directly with us. We spoke with people living in the home and any relatives available on the day and they told us told that they felt confident that any matters raised with the home would be dealt with appropriately. We saw that there were informal meetings for the residents where they are able to give their opinion of the running of the home. Quality monitoring processes are in place which ensure that people are given the opportunity to express their views about the running of the home and these are used effectively to improve the quality of home. The home had a dedicated training officer who had the necessary qualifications to train the staff. Records showed us that most staff had attended either Abuse in the care home or Recognising and responding to abuse training. We were told that further training on safeguarding vulnerable adults had been ordered and there was a plan to do refresher training with all staff. Training records also showed us that senior staff had attended training relating to the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards so that they were aware of this legislation and how to use it appropriately.
