Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received about Park View since the last key inspection on 13th January 2009. This information included the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This is a self-assessment document that the manager has completed to tell us how well outcomes are being met for the people who live here. We have also looked at any other information we have received, such as events or changes that the home has told us about. These are called notifications and it is important that the home keeps us up-to-date about anything that affect the running of the service. We have looked at the previous inspection report to see what improvements the home has made since then. Since the last inspection the deputy manager has been appointed, and registered, as the manager. We have talked with the manager about the progress of the home. What has this told us about the service? The manager sent us the AQAA when we asked for it. The AQAA was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. At the time of this review there were 15 residents living at the home. The lower occupancy means that the plans for redecoration of this older building have slowed down. However the AQAA shows that the home continues to make improvements where possible. Since the last inspection three bedrooms have been redecorated. All bedroom doors are now fitted with name plates and photographs to help people find their way around the home independently. The manager also commented that doors have been fitted with updated fire protection following a recent fire safety inspection. It is good practice that the home tries to involve residents in the running of the service. For example the home has an opinion book for residents which is used each month to record their views and suggestions about the service eg food, accommodation and care. The AQAA states that care plans have been improved so that they are now more detailed about peoples individual needs. There are now weekly visits to the home by an activity staff, and the home has plans to find volunteers to support residents to go on outings. We received one survey from a resident who said that they were always or usually satisfied with all aspects of the service. They said that the home is particularly good at keeping rooms clean and at managing residents laundry. It is good that the staff team was recently awarded Carer of the Year 2009 by the Cooperative funeral care service. The home has developed a new Induction Pack for new staff to support them in their role. All staff are being trained in a national care qualification (called NVQ level 2 or 3). At this time, 8 of the 14 care staff have achieved Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 this award and other staff are working towards it. The new manager has also recently achieved NVQ level 4, which is a suitable qualification for a manager of a care service. The manager has worked at Park View for 19 years and this supports the good continuity of care management at the home. We received three surveys from staff who were all very positive about the support, training and management that they receive. Staff said that the home is particularly good at promoting individualised care and choices for the people who live here. Staff also commented on the good relationship with residents and their families. One staff said, Its such a friendly, happy home that makes everyone feel welcome. All three staff commented that the home could be better decorated. In discussions the manager confirmed that the redecoration programme will continue as and when finances become available. There were no requirements made at the last inspection. All previous recommendations have been met or are being addressed. The home has kept us notified about any events in the home that we should know about. It has worked with other agencies to ensure people remain safeguarded at the home. Our judgement is that the service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
