What did we do for this annual service review? This Annual Service Review was undertaken on 25th September 2009. We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Any information we have about how the service responded to and manages complaints and safeguarding adults referrals. The previous key inspection which was undertaken on the 29th September 2008 and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations, such as the local authority. Information from people that use the service or from those that visit it. This was obtained by the Care Quality Commission sending out surveys to the home and six were returned to the Commission and their contents are included in these assessments. In addition the registered provider/manager Mrs Theresa Schneider, was contacted by telephone for up to date information about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home returned the Annual Auality Assurance (AQAA) within the dates requested. This provided information about what was happening in the home, however it did not always support what was being said in the AQQA with examples and did not provide an update on the shortfalls in practices noted at the previous inspection. This was fedback to the provider/manager. The provider manager reported that there were currently nineteen residents residing at the home. The previous key inspection was positive with the home noted to do particularly well in enabling residents to exercise some choice and control over their lives, a clean and pleasant environment, good access to health care support and varied good quality meals. One requirement was made at this inspection which related to the need to improve the standards of care planning. The manager confirmed that they have introduced new care planning documentation which provides for a person centred approach to care planning and has addressed the previous shortfall. Surveys were sent out to the home for distribution to residents, staff, health care professionals and relatives or other stakeholders involved in residents care. Without exception all persons consulted spoke positively about their experiences of the home with particular reference to the homely relaxed atmosphere, a sample of their comments includes because the home is small the staff are able to take a real interest Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 in the care of each client. The staff are always cheerful and helpful very good activities and entertainment great staff very supportive and caring, meals varied and very good plenty of fruit. Fresh flowers everywhere beautiful gardens. Pinehurst is an exceptionally good care home nothing is too much trouble and the ambiance is excellent with no sings whatsoever of institutionalisation no inoffensive odours and the whole atmosphere is more liken to a country hotel with very good quality furnishings. medical attention is very good. There is a quality monitoring process in place to enable the views of residents and stakeholders involved in their care to be actively sought, listened to and any actions taken to improve service delivery. This has resulted in changes to the environment, menus, activities and the provision of transport to be able to take small groups of residents on outings. The manager spoke of a number of improvements that have occurred over the previous twelve months, which have benefited residents. This has included redecoration of the dinning room, new corridor carpets and lounge furnishing. Staff have undergone numerous additional training courses to improve their knowledge of new legislation and good practices recommendations in residents rights. Developments to the service which are planned for over the next twelve months, include further expansion of the activities programe, continuing update of the enviornement and the creation of a homes website. The manager reported that their remains a very stable staff team with no staffing turnover. Much positive feedback was received regarding the kindness of staff, a sample of comments included staff provide genuine loving care to residents are always professional friendly kind and thoughtful to the needs of residents and the staff are dedicated and loving also well qualified and have a great deal of patience. The home continues to notify the commission of certain events that involve and effect residents, this includes accidents. There has been one safeguarding adult protection referral made relating to the home since the previous inspection, which was being investigated by social services. The manager reported that no recommendations were made as a result of their investigation. All persons fedback that they felt confident to raise any conerns they had with the provider/manager, a service users fedback the manager is very open to being approached and is always ready to listen and respond to any queries immediately. The information provided by the home and other sources confirmed that the Commissions judgement is that the home is still providing good outcomes for residents. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? There will be no change to the inspection plan and we will do a key inspection by the 29th September 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
