Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included, The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Ten surveys were returned to us by people using the service and six surveys from members of staff working for the service and three from health care professionals. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. This includes any safeguarding adult work including referrals and joint working. The previous key inspection, and any other visits we have made to the service. Information provided by the registered manager and responsible individual. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us the information we asked for. We carried out a key inspection of the service on 8th October 2008 and the judgement was that the service provided a three star excellent service. We looked at the information in the AQAA and considered other information we had received . Our judgement is that the outcomes remain excellent for people who use the service. The AQAA informs us that the manager has continued to improve the service by continuing to review and update policies and procedures. Information is produced in written and symbol format to enable residents who can not manage written word to be made aware of the services available to them. The Responsible Individual is producing a website to enable prospective residents to gain information regarding Purbeck House. The environment at Purbeck House is being improved all the time. Since the last inspection new carpets and redecoration has taken place for several bedrooms and a plan is in place to upgrade other bedrooms . Residents are consulted on the colour scheme for their rooms. New lounge furniture has been purchased and the AQAA informs us of ongoing refurbishment to provide comfortable and safe surroundings for the residents. Staff recruitment practises remain robust and the training prgramme has expanded to Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 ensure all staff receive training in respect of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty training. Staff are also receiving training in respect of equalitys and diversity to ensure they can meet all of the residents identified social and health care needs. Eight of the ten care staff have attained a National Vocational qualification (NVQ) in Care which means that staff have gained further skills and knowledge to enable them to carry out their job roles. Comment cards we received back contained positive comments. Responses to the questions what does the service do well? included Cares well for the residents, promotes all residents needs and privacy, serves good balanced meals, meeting all dietary requirements, good personal centred care, training is very regular, all new aspects of my job covered, very well run with a good manager, makes appropriate use of NHS facilities. Would recommend to families or friends who have relatives with mental illness and in this age category, care for clients on an individual basis managing the person not their illness, sensible problem solving approach, good communication and appropriate use of GPs. Residents completed their surveys with help and their responses were positive and included comments such as pleasant manner, the staff are available to help as well as they can and solve any problems we may have, nice clean home and cheerful staff. The staff listen to you if your not feeling well and they are all very kind. The food is always fresh and very tasty. A record of all comments made from resident meetings and meeting with residents on a one to one basis is maintained. Residents are able to raise any issues and action will be taken to improve the matter if possible. An example of this is introducing an hourly check on all bathrooms and toilets to ensure they are kept clean and tidy for residents to use. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection such as when people have been admitted to hospital for treatment or have accidents in the service. We can see from the AQAA that any complaints made have been actioned and responded to promptly. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 7th October 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
