Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: The focus of this unannounced Random Inspection was care planning, the storage and administration of medicines and staff recruitment and training. We were in the home from 10.00 a.m. until 2.00 p.m. and spoke with some residents, the proprietors and Manager and some staff. Parts of the home and some records were inspected. Each resident has a care plan and two were inspected in detail. The home uses the Standex care planning system that provides adequate facility for recording individuals personal and health care needs but is limited for detailed care planning for social care support. The Manager stated she is aware of this and is reviewing the care plan format used. Part of this process will include a review of the existing information to ensure it is up to date. The Manager is also aware that some daily records are more detailed and descriptive of the days activities and in conveying how the resident has responded during the day and how they feel emotionally. She understands that accurate and detailed information gives a full picture of the persons lifestyle and is monitoring the quality of the daily records and offering support and guidance to staff where required. All the residents we spoke with said that staff members have a very good understanding of their individual needs and preferences. They said they have ready access to healthcare professionals including local doctors, chiropodists, dentists and opticians. Staff say they receive good support from healthcare professionals such as District Nurses and GPs. There limited facilities for the storage and preparation of medicines. The Manager is aware of the need to fully comply with the latest guidelines from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and is assessing how best to do this within the environmental restrictions of the home. Medications are only administered by staff members trained to do so and the Medication Record Administration Record (MAR) sheets seen were completed appropriately. The administration of medicines was not observed on this occasion. People living at the home say they feel safe and well supported. They feel confident they are listened to and any necessary action is taken. The Home keeps a record of all complaints received by them, the result of the investigation and how the complaint has been resolved. Records show the home has not received any complaints in the last twelve months and the Commission has not directly received any information regarding complaints about the home in that time. The standard of cleanliness in the parts of the home seen is good and residents commented on how clean their rooms are kept. There is a well maintained garden that residents say they enjoy using in pleasant weather. Residents are very complimentary about the food at the home and say the cook provides good quality meals. Recruitment processes are robust and offer protection to people living at the Home. People applying to work at the home have to complete an application form, attend an Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 interview, provide references and satisfactory Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) and Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) checks. The files of two recently recruited staff show that appropriate checks were made prior to them commencing duties. New staff members are required to undertake an induction programme. Staff members speak of regular training and there are certificates on their files. The Manager acknowledges the training matrix needs updating to give a management overview of courses attended and those booked. Residents say that staff are kind and gentle, this was confirmed by observation. It is clear that staff have developed friendly and positive relationships with residents and are considerate of their age and dignity.
