What did we do for this annual service review? The annual service review for Ryecourt included the following: The last key inspection was undertaken on 28th October 2008 when it received a quality rating of two stars. The home was asked to complete an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment by us. The AQAA is a self assessment and data set, which providers are asked to complete each year and is one of the main ways we obtain information about how they are meeting outcomes for people using their service. Completion of the AQAA gives providers the opportunity to tell us about their service and how well they think they are performing. The information given allows us to develop a picture of the service being provided and target our inspection activity. Due to administrative difficulties within the Commission no surveys were returned by the time this Annual Service Review was carried out. We take into account what the home has told us about things that have happened in the previous twelve months, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. What has this told us about the service? The manager of the home returned the AQAA to us when we asked for it. The information was clear and showed how they were meeting the expectations and outcomes for people using the service. They told us they have developed the information package they make available to people during the admission process and following admission to the home. They say this information provides an overview of the service, what it can offer, who the management and staff are and what qualifications they have. This information helps people to make an informed choice about going into the home. They say they are continually upgrading the home internally and externally so it is well maintained homely and comfortable for people to live in. By having a dedicated maintenance team working in the group of homes, means that upgrading of the home is under constant review. There are some new beds in place which include pressure relieving mattresses and in addition new weighing scales are in place as well as a new hoist, so there is equipment in place to ensure the health and personal needs of people can be managed effectively. They told us they make sure Equality and Diversity needs of people living and working there are addressed by making sure various religious ministers visit individual residents as well as holding services in the home. Staff are recruited and inducted based on the principles of Equality and Diversity so they are not disadvantaged in any way. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 They told us there has been a change of manager in the last twelve months and some changes in the staff team, which have been unsettling for some people. However, they say they are using feedback from people using the service in order to maintain a consistent approach to care. We spoke to the manager about registration with the Care Quality Commission, as this is a requirement of the Care Standards Act 2000, and the Care Homes Regulations 2001 where the registered person is not in day to day control of the home. The manager told us they would be applying for registration within the immediate future. The owner makes monthly visits to the home in order to monitor the running of the home and highlight any issues or concerns. This information is used as part of the business planning programme for the development of the service. Information we received told us they are continuing to develop activity plans for people so that peoples needs and choices are met. They said there is a comprehensive complaints procedure available to people who use the service which is included in the homes written information. There have been two complaints investigated by the home in the previous twelve months, of which they say both were not upheld. The information we received told us staff continue to have access to training, and that the manager is focusing on developing the supervision programme to ensure there is regular supervision for all staff so that they are monitored in their individual roles and they have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor information about this service and will carry out an inspection when required.
