What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received about Seaton Hall since the last key inspection on 24th February 2009. This information included the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This is a self-assessment document that the manager has completed to tell us how well outcomes are being met for the people who live here. We have also looked at any other information we have received, such as events or changes that the home has told us about. These are called notifications and it is important that the home keeps us upto-date about anything that affect the running of the service. We have looked at the previous inspection report to see what improvements the home has made since then. We talked to the manager about any changes to the service. What has this told us about the service? The Provider sent us the AQAA when we asked for it. The AQAA was very detailed and gave us all of the information we asked for. Like many homes in the area, Seaton Hall has had very few new residents for some time and at this time there are 15 people living here. The AQAA shows that the low occupancy has affected the availability of finance for improvements. For example, planned refurbishment such as en-suites has not yet taken place. Following a request by CQC, the homes accountant wrote to us in May 2009 to confirm that the home remained financially viable. The AQAA shows that the home has made improvements wherever possible. The home brochure has been improved to give more description of the service, so that potential new residents would have more details of what to expect. Care plans (which are records about what people need support with) have been improved so that there is more guidance for staff about how to care for peoples individual needs. It is very good practice that all staff have completed a Dementia Awareness course and most staff have also completed a Dementia, Delirium and Depression course. This means they have good understanding of how to support people with dementia care needs. It is also good that most staff have a national qualification in care (called NVQ level 2) and there are plans for the remaining staff to work towards this award. The home continues to make plans for improvements for the future. It is planned that a Residents Forum will be created to give residents a greater influence in how the home is run. The Provider is hoping to set up an internet website to inform people about the service. The home would also like to employ an activities staff to provide a greater range of activities for the people who live here. The home would like to develop a sensory room that will provide a stimulating experience for the people who live here. At the last inspection earlier this year, residents had many positive comments to make about the service they receive here. We have had no indication that this has changed. A recent monitoring visit by independent lay visitors reported that people living at Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Seaton Hall continue to enjoy a good service. The AQAA shows that the home has had no complaints. CQC has received no complaints or safeguarding adults referrals about the home. We feel that Seaton Hall is still providing a good service for the people who live here. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan. However we can inspect the home any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people who live here.
