Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We last visited the home for its key inspection on 4 March 2009 when we rated it as a 2 star or good service. What did we do for this Annual Service Review We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information that we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The AQAA tells us that in the last 12 months the service has been improving the dining facilities and menu choices for people living in the home. Following discussion with people and relatives the service has reviewed the menus and included a number of different meals requested by individuals. The dining room has been redecorated and has new carpets fitted to create a more homely environment; a new menu board has been put up making it easier for people to read what is on the daily menu. The AQQa tells us that improvements to the laundry system within the service have been made and that better communication between the staff and others has meant that there has been a reduction in lost clothing. The laundry room has been redecorated and there has been additional shelving fitted for storage of clothing; this has produced a more organised service. The service has an ongoing maintenance and redecoration programme and in the last Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 12 months new carpets have been fitted throughout the home and the whole premises has been re-painted. The gardens have been landscaped, with new flower beds and outdoor seating for people using the service. Following a Contract Compliance visit carried out by the local Social Services the staff at the home have received training in care planning and documentation, resulting in better records being kept and information around the Mental Capacity Act (regarding peoples rights and choices to make decisions) being put into their care plans. We received 5 surveys back from people using the service, 2 surveys from health and social care professionals and 3 surveys from staff. People living in the home told us that they are happy there. People commented that they get the care and support that they require and staff are readily available to offer help when required. Individuals told us the home is clean, the food is good and we are well looked after. Information from the health and social care professionals surveys indicates that the service is meeting the needs of the people who live there; that individuals are treated well and the service is well staffed and clean. Information from the staff surveys indicates that the training opportunities for individuals has improved over the last 12 months and that staff are given support and supervision from the manager. Staff told us that the care at the home is very good, and the manager does a really good job. The food is varied with a good choice and it is plentiful and well presented. We have been notified of one formal complaint which the home manager dealt with and resolved quickly, this was around the behaviour of one service user towards others. In the last 12 months we were notified of 10 safeguarding of adults from abuse allegations within the the service. Seven of these were looked at by the local authoritys safeguarding of adults team and needed no further action as the home had appropriate risk assessments and procedures in place to keep individuals safe. Three allegations were investigated and the outcomes were that two allegations were unsubstantiated and one allegation resulted in a member of staff being referred to the Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) list. As part of this Annual Service Review we have spoken to the local authority safeguarding team and they are satisfied that the home has adequate policies and procedures in place to keep people safe. They feel the home works well with them to resolve any issues and will listen and act on any advice given. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection, and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 It is our statutory responsibility to inspect all care services at least once every 3 years. The completion of this Annual Service Review has not changed our view of the quality rating for this service, therefore we are not planning to carry out a key inspection of this service before 3 March 2012. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
