What did we do for this annual service review? This Annual Service Review took place on the 27th January 2010. We last undertook an inspection of this service on the 21st January 2008. We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the owner/ manager. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about how this home is run. Information was also looked at about how the service has managed any complaints. The owner of the home has told us about things that have happened over the past 12 months; these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report also gave us some information on how this service was progressing. What has this told us about the service? We were sent an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) by the owner that told us about how this service was progressing and what changes had been made to improve the service for the people who live there. There have been several training events for the care staff including instruction in safeguarding vulnerable people, moving people safely, medication awareness, continence management, infection control, dementia awareness and first aid. Appropriate and regular training helps to ensure that the care staff have the knowledge, skills and ability to undertake their caring responsibilities successfully. All new carers go through an induction process prior to starting work to give them a good ground knowledge of how the service operates. All of the care staff have a nationally recognised qualification in care (National Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3). Two of the senior carers have attained level 4 of this qualification. The manager of the service has knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and associated deprivation of liberty safeguards, and training for the care staff has been planned in this area. This is to help ensure that people remain safe within this service and that their interests are safeguarded. Those who are interested in going to live at Springfield Retirement Home have good information to help them to make an informed decision about the service. The owner encourages prospective residents to spend as much time as possible there prior to making a decision and a detailed pre-admission booklet is completed to ensure that the service has a good knowledge of health and social care needs before admittance. The owner of the service also told us about the range of activities that were in place and the importance that was placed upon providing a wide range of daily activities for the residents who live within the service. This was pleasing, because a good activities programme helps to ensure that the residents maintain interests, and receive appropriate stimulation and activity. This has also enabled some of the residents to enjoy the resources and facilities that are available in the local community. Since our last visit to Springfield Retirement Home several bedrooms have been redecorated and had new carpets. A new boiler has been fitted, along with a new central heating Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 system. This has made the home more comfortable for people to live in. The serviced has a quality assurance system and customer satisfaction questionnaires are sent out to the residents and their relatives. We sent out surveys to people who use this service but none were returned to us. No complaints have been made about the service since our last inspection activity. We have found that the owner deals with complaints properly and professionally under the homes complaints procedure. Overall we find this service continues to provide excellent outcomes for those who live there. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor any information we receive about this service. We can, however, inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
