What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received or asked for since the last key inspection or annual service review. The registered provider was asked to provide the Commission with an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This gives the provider the opportunity to carry out an assessment of the service and to tell us how well outcomes are being met for people using the service what the service is doing well what has improved since the last inspection visit and how the service can continue to improve. It also provides us with information on how the provider is promoting equality and diversity within the service and it provides us with data on residents staffing and policies and procedures. The AQQA was read in detail and some of the information in this has been used to help inform the findings of this annual review. Surveys were received from members of staff and some of the information and comments within these have been used to help us assess the practices at the home. We have looked at whether there have been any complaints or allegations made to the home or to the Commission about the home and how these have been managed. We have looked at any notifications received from the home. Notifications are made about any incidents which may adversly effect the health and well being of residents and the registered provider has a legal obligation to make these. We have reviewed all information received regarding the home since the last inspection visit. Some of this information may have been received from the owner or manager of the home from visiting professionals or from direct contacts to the Commission. What has this told us about the service? The providers assessment (AQAA) has informed us that there have been developments to the service over the past 12 months. These developments include; The activity programme has been adjusted to more appropriately suit the needs of residents who prefer one to one activities. This has been achieved by increasing the number of activity co-ordinators from 2 to 3. An activity co-ordinator has also achieved qualifications in providing alternative therapies and manicures pedicures. Activities are also better advertised with two new notice boards placed in the foyer especially for this purpose. A monthly residents relatives newsletter has been introduced which provides information on upcoming events activities and plans for the home. The homes brochure has been updated and a large print brochure has been devised for people who have difficulties with their eye sight. Improvements have been made to some of the paperwork in residents files with regards to Mental Capacity Assessments, Diabetes recording, and falls risk assessments. There have been numerous improvements to the home environment and increased aids and adaptations to assist residents including new carpet to seventeen of the residents bedrooms, flat screen television in eighteen Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 residents bedrooms, refurbishment of the kitchen area, refurbishment and redecoration of two dinning rooms, double glazing to all windows, numerous communal areas have been redecorated and a number of profiling beds pressure relieving mattresses and hoists have been attained. Staff induction and mandatory training materials have been updated and there has been an increase in the number of staff who hold a relevant qualification. Additional staff training has included training in the Mental Capacity Act, dementia awareness, safeguarding adults, medicine management, fist aid and basic life support. A member of staff commented in a staff survey There are always courses ongoing at St Bartholomews. The training is very good. Surveys were sent to members of staff and a good number of these were completed and returned to us. The surveys included questions on issues such as; staff being given up to date information about the needs of the residents, being provided with training which is relevant to their role and which helps them to understand and meet the individual needs of the residents, the level of support provided by the manager, whether or not they feel there are enough staff to meet the needs of the residents. The staff responses to these questions were positive throughout and there were no negative responses received. One member of staff commented We always do our best and the comfort and happiness of all residents is our number one priority. Another member of staff commented that the service caters for all individuals to the best of its ability and Encourages and maintains independence where possible. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. There have been no notifications of concern and no complaints or safeguarding issues raised since the last review of the service. After reviewing the afore mentioned information we have concluded that the service continues to provide excellent outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue with our inspection plan for this service. We will carry out a key inspection which will include a site visit to the home by 08/04/2011. We can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using it. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
