What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received since the last key inspection. This included: --The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well the service meets the needs of people living there. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. --11 surveys returned to us by people using the service (16 requested). --Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. --What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement. --The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. --Relevant information from other organisations. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and comprehensive, giving us all the information we asked for. Currently the service is accommodating thirty six patients. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that St Georges Nursing Home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they can make, including capital development. The AQAA told us that as a result of listening to service users views specifically requested meal dishes are being made available from time to time in addition to the range of choice already in place, the timing of the supper dish is later than the usual 5:30-6:00 pm; a 45 wide flat screen TV has been purchased which has enhanced the enjoyment of the cinema club participants. We were told that the service has increased the staffing levels since last year to provide better and closer care for each resident, yet not increased the fees for approximately 24 months. Sixteen Registered General Nurses (RGNs) are in employment and 77 of the care workers are qualified to National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 2 and above. Seven have completed NVQ Level 3, which is well above what is required. There is now a full time Training Officer on the staff who is maintaining the momentum in providing mandatory training for the staff team and developing training in the fields of palliative care, infection control, recognising abuse, the Mental capacity Act, special dietary needs and dementia awareness. The nursing home told us it has introduced swine flu response and treatment into their training schedules and introduced contingency Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 planning to deal with any emergencies affecting the homes locality. There is on-going refurbishment and redecoration and a rolling programme of review and upgrading for equipment. Different colour schemes have been introduced around the nursing home to help people with visual impairment. A new Welcome Pack has been drafted to assist residents on their admission with understanding exactly what services and facilities are available. Each of the service users who responded to the surveys said they had been provided with information about the service and a contract detailing the terms of their residence. All knew who to talk with if they were concerned about anything; two were unsure who to make a formal complaint to but said it wasnt necessary anyway. The nursing home scored unanimous top marks for activities, staff responsiveness and the care and support they receive. I have considerable respect for St Georges, the environment, the prevailing atmosphere in which it operates, and its care and consideration for patients. Another patient said always welcoming and always with a smile. My family are greatly relieved that I am in such caring and thoughtful hands. It must rank as one of the very best in England and I mean just that. The food is wonderful here. Skilled and caring nursing staff. Courteous and supportive staff to residents and relatives. I have really enjoyed the Summer parties. My relative always tells me how kind everyone is to them. Everyone is cheerful and kind. As part of the survey the following suggestions for improvements were made. The garden could be more wheelchair friendly. A Church of England service on Sundays and at Christmas. Have more staff. Sometimes carers forget to put glasses on and the remote control/papers are left out of reach, but usually everything is fine. No legal requirements were made as a result of the last inspection in February 2009, and no complaints have been received about this service. The service continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection. Notified incidents have been reported. The service has fully co-operated and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and we will do a key inspection by 23 February 2011. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
