Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we received since the last key inspection. The registered manager completed an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This document is a self assessment that focuses on how well the outcomes are being met for people using the service. We checked whether there had been any concerns, complaints or allegations. We looked at other information received from the home that is required by regulation. This included notifications of issues related to peoples well being as required by Regulation 37 of the Care Homes Regulations. We looked at the last key inspection report. What has this told us about the service? The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) gave the registered person the opportunity to say what the home did well, what had improved and what they were working on to improve. The information demonstrated that the home had a proactive approach to meeting peoples needs and wishes. The homes rehabilitation unit employed a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist to assess and work with carers for the benefit of people who were attending for rehabilitation. They said that there was a more person centred approach to care planning. The care plan is completed with as much input from service user themselves, to maximise diversity and choice. People were weighed and nutritionally screened on admission and they had access to health services if needed. Independence was promoted and people were encouraged to self medicate within a risk management framework. Privacy and dignity was respected and people were issued with keys to their bedroom doors and lockable facilities. Activities were dependent on the group of people in the home at any particular time. Weekly exercise/therapy group was carried out for people who were attending for rehabilitation but people on respite care were welcome to attend. They said that independence and retention of life skills were promoted. People were encouraged to go out into the community and follow their usual lifestyle and many people attending for respite care continued to attend their day centres. Visitors were made welcome and people could receive their visitors in the communal areas or in their bedrooms. Future plans were to purchase computers to provide email and web camera access for people whose families are unable to visit. It was also envisaged that people could be taught how to use the computer to shop on line to help retain their independence. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Meals took account of peoples preferences and snacks and fruit were always available. They said that the home was clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. New furniture and soft furnishings had been purchased. Feedback from people using the service had highlighted that they would like a walk in shower and plans were in place to accommodate this facility. They said that staff continued to receive training to ensure that they were skilled. This included training in adult safeguarding, the Mental Capacity Act and infection control. All new employees undertook induction training. NVQ training was promoted and three of the staff were NVQ assessors. There were no allegations of abuse and no complaints about this service. We continued to be informed about issues relating to peoples wellbeing as required by Regulation 37 of the Care Homes Regulation. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will carry out a key inspection by 19th May 2010. The service will continue to be monitored and we can carry out an inspection if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people living there.
