What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received, or asked for since the last key inspection on 24th February 2009 . This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQQA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQQA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. The previous key inspection report and the results of any other visits we have made to the home in the last 12 months. Information we have about how the service has managed complaints. Relevant information from other organisations. A brief telephone conversation with the deputy manager. The results of surveys we sent to service users, staff and other health care professionals. We received 3 completed surveys from social and health care professionals and 1 from staff. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us the AQQA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQQA and our judgment is that the home is still providing an excellent service and they know what further improvements they need to make. The home operates an open door policy and encourages relatives, friends and professionals to talk to staff. Staff and relative/resident meetings are also used to find out about what people think about the service. As a result of listening to people more outings have been arranged for residents and the chef now liaises with residents and relatives about the choice of food available. Other improvements in the last 12 months include the manager gaining the NVQ level 4 and health and safety certificate. A new deputy has been appointed who has attained a palliative care qualification. There are 4 first aiders and 2 moving and handling facilitators in house. And 72 of care staff have gained the NVQ level 2 qualification in care or above. The activities coordinator and administrator are both now full time. The chef is attending a 6 week course with health service dieticians. And 2 dignity champions have been appointed to make sure residents are provided with a high standard of care. The manager told us that there is always a Registered Nurse on duty. And that the home continues to have good relationships with other professionals such as GPs and district nurses. She also told us that care plans have improved and are now more personalised. Activities have also improved and residents are now members of Beamish Museum. There are also regular church services both in the home and at local churches. Plans for improvement in the next 12 months include the provision of new garden furniture, access for people who use wheelchairs from the rear of the building, up- Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 dating of the laundry, training for staff about how to deal with complaints, and upgrading of furnishings. The manager told us that she has received 3 complaints in the last 12 months, all of which she has resolved within 28 days. The manager told us that 13 staff have left in the last 12 months. We spoke to the deputy manager about this who confirmed that usually there is a very low turn over in staff, and the higher turn over this year is attributed to individual personal circumstances. There were 3 requirements made at the last inspection. The deputy manager confirmed that action is being taken by the home to address these. Staff said in surveys that they had been given training relevant to their work, that they are supported by their manager and knew what to do if someone had concerns about the home. They also said that there were usually enough staff to meet the individual needs of the service users. Additional comments from staff included: Stonleigh is well respected by the multi-disciplinary teams and is recognised as a centre of excellence for palliative care. Social and health care professionals who visit the home said: this is the best home in my patch by a large margin. The atmosphere is good, care is compassionate. To be congratulated, service is generally very good and above average in comparison with other local comparable facilities and good level of nursing care and palliative care. Very supportive towards familys and carers. Good social activities within the home and outside the home. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by 24th February 2012. However, we can visit the service at any time if information is provided that suggests service users are at risk of harm or abuse. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
