Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all of the information we have received since the previous inspection, which was carried out by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI). This included: 1)The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA), which had been completed and sent by the registered manager of Sue Ryder Care Birchley Hall. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for the people who have been living at the home. The AQAA also gave us some numerical information about the home. 2) The information that we have received and recorded in the service Inspection Record. The inspection record contains any information we have received since the last inspection visit. 3) Any information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. The AQAA states that one complaint had been received in the last twelve months. This had been dealt with appropriately and within the recognised timescale of twenty eight days. 4) What the service has told us about things that have happened in the home. These are called notifications and it is a legal requirement of the provider to keep us informed of such events. 5) The previous Key Inspection Report (04/12/07) that had been completed by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) and an Annual Service Review completed (03/12/08) by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) were taken into account in order to complete this Annual Service Review (ASR). 6) Surveys that have been received by the CQC from some of the people using the service, with the comments being, I am satisfied with everything, especially the attendance offered by everyone of the staff, barring no one I am very contented being a resident here the catering is very good carers are kind and attentive it is a clean, warm, caring and safe dignified place to live very good staff who are professional and personable I am well looked after and do not need to worry about anything They look after me and enable me to have help with things I cannot manage to do myself I am looked after 24 hours a day and 7 days a week and The home is a beautiful building and in lovely surroundings, which are well maintained, inside and outside. One relative said,The staff have soon got to know my father and know when he is ok and equally when he is has problem. A few other comments were, We need more entertainment I feel we could do better with activities and He sometimes seems bored, because he cant remember and doesnt have the capacity to initiate an activity. A nudge by staff would help, for example, going into the garden, looking at books and practical games. Generally the comments received were very positive about the level of care being provided at Sue Ryder Care Birchley Hall. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 What has this told us about the service? The AQAA gave the CQC all the information we had asked for and it also reflected previous inspection findings. Some of the information contained in the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment, which have improved in the previous twelve months were: *We have employed a social activities co-coordinator to deliver social activities to supplement activities delivered by the care staff as part of their role. *We have improved the patio area by laying a new surface and re-fencing. *Purchased garden furniture to compliment the outdoor space. *Fully refurbishment of the dining room. *Improved the external security by fitting an external lighting scheme. *The introduction of a communication strategy for 2009 to ensure all care staff, service users, support staff, admin staff have regular meetings. *The organisation have introduced a clinical supervision policy which is in the process of being adopted by Birchley Hall, this will support staff in introducing monthly reflective practice sessions. *The registered manager has completed advanced health and social care training. *Senior Support Workers have successfully achieved NVQ3 in Health and Social Care and are now working towards NVQ2 in Team Leadership. *The organisation has recruited a service user involvement lead who has visited Birchley Hall on several occasions to speak to service users and staff . This has resulted in The Strategy for Involvement of People in Our Care being updated and revised. *We have developed quality initiatives and a monitoring process. *We have recruited volunteers to enhance the service we deliver. *We have introduced organisational policies and procedures that safeguard service users and practices within the home. *The organisation has a coordinated service user involvement groups and service user champions to assist in representing the voice of the people using the service. *The care centre manager at Birchley Hall has volunteered for this role, with the aims, objectives and the values of the group will be to have a committed approach to service user involvement across the whole of Sue Ryder Care.
