What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the home. We looked at what the home has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Seven surveys completed by people who live in the home (some with the help of family or friends) and five completed by people who work in the home, were returned to us. We looked at the previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. We looked to see if we had any relevant information, given to us by other organisations. We listened to what other people have told us about the service, if anything. What has this told us about the service? We received the annual quality assurance assessment on or before the date it was due back. It was completed to a high standard and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service. The AQAA noted that improvements had been made as a result of the home listening to the views of the people who live there, these included, major improvements in the environment (garden, bathrooms, living areas, a new conservatory and the garden area), expanded the variety of activities people are able to participate in and changed the timings of breakfast which has made a big difference to peoples comfort. Other improvements include increasing the number of staff and staff being sent on dignity in care training. They have development plans for the coming year which include ensuring that plans of care more accurately reflect individual circumstances, needs and wants. People who use the surveys returned very positive surveys to us, comments included, I like it here, good quality of care, there is always someone to assist, good meals, I like tea in bed in the morning, squirrels in the garden and watching the aeroplanes, there are lots of things to do, food quite good and we can always have something else if we dont want what weve got, I am very happy here, staff and carers look after us well and are very kind to us, the home does most things well and they make sure we have plenty to drink. One additional comment was, I would like bacon and eggs in the morning. Staff noted that there is a family atmosphere, good team work, there is a good and varied activity programme, high standards of hygiene and good catering facilities, the Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 needs of clients are served well, they are stimulated, active and cared for by well trained staff, they make good use of limited funding particularly regarding catering and activities, we meet individual needs, try to maintain a safe clean and welcoming environment, we are good at encouraging residents to join in with the community and activities, we help people to maintain independence and motivation. Less positive comments were, we need more time for administration (completing plans of care), some units may need higher staffing ratios to meet peoples individual needs, we need more funding for activities, staff need more support and praise and residents need more 1:1 time, there needs to be greater emphasis on individual need. The home demonstrates its commitment to equality and diversity in a number of ways such as, ensuring everyone is treated as an individual, providing information about the home in a range of languages, providing different faith services and the activities officer organising specific cultural and faith events that reflect peoples diverse backgrounds and help people to better understand each other. The home continues to let us know what has happened in the service and works well with us. The home notes that it has received only one complaint, which is still being dealt with. The Commission has received no information with regard to complaints or safeguarding issues about the service. The home continues to provide good outcomes for people who live in the home. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by the 1st December 2012. However we can inspect the home at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using it. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
