What the care home does well A tour of the premises was undertaken with the manager. Three requirements were issued for improvement at the previous inspection. The first was for1) The broken window in the dining room must be repaired. During a tour of the premise it was noted that the dining room window has been repaired. 2) A risk assessment must be carried out regarding the unsafe patio area, so that no injury is caused to people living at the home, or to staff, in the event of a fire. During a tour of the premises the manager pointed out that the patio area has been relaid to ensure it is safe for service users. In addition to this the decking area has been jet washed and treated to ensure it is not slippery and a new path has been laid in the garden area. 3) A risk assessment must be carried out to minimise risks to people in the dining room, in the event of more stones being thrown from the pathway. The manager said that several youths who used to live in the area often threw stones at the windows in the home, resulting in a broken dining window. However they have now moved away and the manager said this is no longer an issue. Continued improvements to the environment have been completed and include redecoration of the lounge and new sofa`s and a new flat screen TV, four bedrooms have been redecorated and have had the windows replaced, there is new carpet in a room which is to become a sensory room and all communal areas have been redecorated. Visual observations of people using this service showed that people were smartly dressed including jewelery, make up and nail varnish. People were seen to be wearing the aids needed, for example hearing aids and clean glasses. The home has introduced more activities for people who use the service. This includes activities that are tailored to meet the individual needs of the service users. On the day of the visit service users were being supported to put away the weeks food shopping andfollowing this they went out to lunch. What the care home could do better: The home has stairs to the lower floor which is not accessible to people in a wheelchair. The manager said a small number of service users have had to find alternative accommodation when their mobility needs have deteriorated. A stair lift cannot be fitted to the stairs. The manager was advised to include this in the homes statement of purpose. During this visit it was identified that there is one waking night staff. The organisation has a lone working policy and the manager said he undertakes spot checks. However these are not documented and this should be addressed.
