What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received since the last key inspection in October 2008. This included the following: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was completed and sent to us by the service in August 2009. The AQAA is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for those people who use the service. The AQAA document tells us what the staff and management on the Unit do at present, what they feel they do well, how they have improved in the last 12 months and their plans for improvement in the next 12 months. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report that showed the Unit was rated as excellent. What has this told us about the service? Management sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) in August 2009. The information provided showed what improvements management have made and their plans for the next 12 months. Some of the improvements they told us about were: There has been a restructuring of the catering department. The chef plans menus with the dietician and takes into account the service users preferences and nutritional needs. Further training in specific nursing procedures has been provided for the rehabilitation assistants so that certain service users are not excluded from going out into the community to enjoy social activities. More training in safeguarding and managing violence and aggression has been provided, to ensure the safety of the service users and the staff. Improvements to the environment continue to be made. New furniture and new flooring has been provided in some of the bedrooms. New flooring has also been provided to the main corridor. No complaints have been made to us and we have had no cause to visit the Unit since the last inspection in October 2008. Our judgement is that staff are still providing an excellent service for the people living in the Unit. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan. We will do a key inspection by the 1st October 2011. We can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using it.
