Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received about The Fields care home since the last ASR (annual service review) . This information included the homes Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It was completed by the manager of the home. We asked people who use the service and staff to complete surveys for us. These surveys tell us what it is like for people using this service and those who work in the home. We also looked at other information we have about the service. There have been no complaints about this service. The home has told us about any events that have happened. These are called notifications and it is important that the home keeps us upto-date on anything that affects the well being of people using the service. The Fields is good at keeping us informed of these events. We also look at the previous key inspection and any changes to the service since then. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service. It was very detailed with clear evidence of how the home has improved since the last key inspection. Improvements have included better information for people. For example, there is new information leaflet about the home, and the home now produces a quarterly newsletter. It is good practice that the home plans to put some information onto cassette tape and to provide picture menus to help people with communication and sensory needs. Training for staff continues to improve. All staff have had training in medication so that they know how give medication safely. All senior staff are to complete an NVQ medication unit. Several care staff have completed an NVQ Level 3 in care and the manager and deputy have completed Level 4. This will help staff know how to care for people in the best way. There have also been continued improvements to the redecoration and refurbishment of the accommodation. For example, more bedrooms have been redecorated new tiling and new flooring to all bath and shower rooms, and new carpets to corridors and stairs. People living in the home tell us that they are happy living here. They said that they liked the food, and that the home is always fresh and clean. Comments on surveys included, They look after everyone very well and listen to the people in their care. The Fields provides excellent care and good home cooking. They regularly have activities for the residents, helping to break up the day. The residents always look clean, tidy and well cared for and the standard of cleanliness of the home is of a very high standard. In response to the question about what the home does well, one person wrote, The way they care for us and treat us as one of their own family. None of the surveys returned contained any suggestions about how the home could be improved. There have been no complaints since the last inspection. The interview process for new Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 staff now includes a discussion about whistleblowing and different forms of abuse. Staff who returned surveys indicated that they are extremely happy working at the home and that they feel supported. One wrote, I feel very happy to be an employee at The Fields as I think it is an excellent example of a care home and feel that all the residents are very happy and their needs are met very well. Another wrote, The ongoing training needs of the staff are addressed enabling them to provide a better service. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they continue to improve the service for the people who live here. In this way they have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 9th October 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people living here.
