Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service including responses to a CQC satifaction survey completed by residents and ataff. . What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the agency is still providing a good service and that they know what improvements they need to make. In their AQAA the agency told us We do the following to ensure that race, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion and belief are promoted and incorporated into what we do: Listen to our service users and act on their requests. Respect every person; service user, staff, families, visitors and health professionals as individuals. Staff have training in appreciating difference, equality and diversity, both as part of their NVQ and council run training sessions. Care plans shaped to the needs of the individual. Follow the IOW council robust staff recruitment and selection policy Consider the employment of those with learning disability for certain staff vacancies, one person with learning disability appointed last year, the Gouldings offers a supportive work environment which encourages the development of individual skills and abilities Provide regular religious services (Church of England and Catholic) for service users to receive communion. This currently meets the requirements of the service users. Encourage service users to maintain contact with friends and family by inviting them in to the Gouldings, and having outings to promote their mental health, emotional and social well-being. Offer alternatives to the regular menu for those with particular personal, health or religious needs. Opened a satelite community home care office within the Gouldings to promote the independence agenda, and improve joined up working between home care and the Gouldings. Successfully recruited one staff member under the Workright scheme Accessed re-enablement and rehabilitation facilities to promote independent living. Care staff have had re-enablement training. Accomodated an increased number Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 of service users with short memory problems/dementia and as a consequence learnt more about the need to tailor care to each individual. Continued to provide facilities for single room occupancy or shared room occupancy should this be requested Provided rooms with wheelchair access Provided service users with door keys to their rooms as requested. Obtained equipment from the red cross to maintain service user independence. Explored the availability of providing service users information guide in different languages (but with the current service user background there is not a need for this as yet) but this facility is available through the Council. Continued to develop person centred care through the introduction of new assessment paper work. The new paper work has been introduced across service delivery to promote a seamless transfer of care between our residential and home care services. In their AQAA the home also informed us since the last inspection the following changes/improvements have been implemented: Maintained 5 stars in the kitchen Accessed fire training from fire service for all staff Ongoing review of Health & Safety and fire policies and procedures Majority of action plan to address areas for improvement in relation to national minimum standards has be completed. Plans for the future include: Complete action plan Conduct research to provide written evidence of Gouldings performance Completion of staff survey - Stress Indicator tool. Outcome to be analysed by Occupational Health and an action plan drawn up as required. The home has shown that they have managed issues well. No complaints have been received by CSCI the previous regulator or CQC since the last inspection. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for people who use the service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 27th August 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
