What the care home does well The aim of the Lady Verdin Trust is to ensure the people who live at Wellswood Drive receive a service that meets their needs. Staff working at the home are committed to achieving this so people living at the home have a good quality of life and live in safe, comfortable and welcoming surroundings. Staff from the Trust support the people who live at Wellswood Drive to use facilities in the community such as shops, pubs and other leisure resources, so they can take part in everyday activities in the community. We saw that the people who live in the home were comfortable with the staff and readily approached them for help and chat so they could carry out their daily tasks. The care plans we saw showed that people`s individual needs have been identified and that they are given choices so they have control over their daily lives. The home has recently been extended and refurbished to improve the appearance and make it more comfortable for the people who live there. The lady Verdin Trust is committed to making sure that staff have training and supervision so the people who live at the home receive good care and support to enable them to live their daily lives in the way they prefer. What has improved since the last inspection? Improvements have continued to be made to the personal development plans of each person who lives at the home. This makes sure that people`s care needs are monitored and staff have the information they need to meet people`s needs in the way they prefer. The extension to the home has created an en-suite bedroom and the improvements to the bathroom have improved the environment for the people who live in the home. What the care home could do better: A lock that staff can open from the outside in an emergency should be fitted to the communal bathroom/toilet door to improve privacy for people when they are using the bathroom. The cleaning routines for Wellswood Drive should be reviewed to make sure that cleaning tasks are done at a time that is most suitable for the people who live there. CARE HOME ADULTS 18-65

This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. The overall quality rating for this service is 2 stars. This means that the people who use the service experience good quality outcomes.
We made this unannounced visit to the home on 17 and 24 September 2008. It took six and a half hours altogether and was done by one inspector. The visit was just one part of our inspection. Before then the manager was asked to complete a questionnaire to provide up to date information about the home. We made our questionnaires available to the people who live at the home and the staff to find out what they think about it. We also looked at other information we have received about Wellswood Drive since our last inspection there. During our visit, we walked round the home and we checked various records to see what care people living there receive. We spoke with people who live at the home and they told us what they thought about it. We also spoke with staff and with the community service manager of Lady Verdin Trust and they gave use their views about Wellswood Drive. We have included their views throughout the report. The intended outcomes for Standards 1 – 5 are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Prospective service users have the information they need to make an informed choice about where to live. Prospective users’ individual aspirations and needs are assessed. Prospective service users know that the home that they will choose will meet their needs and aspirations. Prospective service users have an opportunity to visit and to “test drive” the home. Each service user has an individual written contract or statement of terms and conditions with the home. The Commission consider Standard 2 the key standard to be inspected. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 2 People who use services experience good care in this outcome area. We have made this judgement using available evidence, including a visit to the service. There are procedures used to make sure that people who may wish to move into the home have their needs assessed before moving in to make sure they and their relatives know their needs can be met at Wellswood Drive. EVIDENCE: The people living in the home have lived there for a number of years. However, the community service director of Lady Verdin Trust told us that there is a thorough procedure followed for new people who may want to move into the home. This ensures that people’s needs are identified and care plans are drawn up to show how those needs will be met. People who are interested in moving in are invited to Wellswood Drive to meet the other people living there and the staff. This is to help them and their relatives decide if the home is right for them. The Lady Verdin Trust has a range of information available about the home and the services provided. This gives people clear information about the home before they move in so they can decide if their needs can be met there. The Lady Verdin Trust Ltd - Wellswood Drive DS0000006558.V368126.R01.S.doc Version 5.2 Page 9 Individual Needs and Choices
The intended outcomes for Standards 6 – 10 are: 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Service users know their assessed and changing needs and personal goals are reflected in their individual Plan. Service users make decisions about their lives with assistance as needed. Service users are consulted on, and participate in, all aspects of life in the home. Service users are supported to take risks as part of an independent lifestyle. Service users know that information about them is handled appropriately, and that their confidences are kept. The Commission considers Standards 6, 7 and 9 the key standards to be inspected. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 6, 7 and 9 People who use services experience good care in this outcome area. We have made this judgement using available evidence, including a visit to the service. People who live at Wellswood Drive have detailed care plans so staff have up to date information about how to meet people’s needs in the way they prefer. EVIDENCE: We looked at the care plans of one person who lives at Wellswood Drive. The plans, called personal development plans, cover all areas of daily life including health, daily routines, daily activities and how the person wishes to be cared for. The records we saw showed that the plans are reviewed with the person, with their key-worker and at reviews arranged by social services. There was copy of a review in the file that showed the person and their relatives attended. This makes sure that each person who lives at the home has a say in how their care is given. During our visit, we saw staff talking with the people who live in the home about what they wanted to do that day, what meals they preferred and getting them involved in household tasks. We could see that staff knew people well
The Lady Verdin Trust Ltd - Wellswood Drive DS0000006558.V368126.R01.S.doc Version 5.2 Page 10 and gave them the right level of support to help them make their own decisions. Each person who lives in the home has a file with details of their finances and what help they need to manage these. We saw risk assessments in the care plans we looked at that covered any help people needed with moving around, including using a hoist. These are to make sure that the person is safe. Other possible areas of risk to people when they are in the home had been identified and safety measures put in place to ensure their safety. Service users are able to take part in age, peer and culturally appropriate activities. Service users are part of the local community. Service users engage in appropriate leisure activities. Service users have appropriate personal, family and sexual relationships. Service users’ rights are respected and responsibilities recognised in their daily lives. Service users are offered a healthy diet and enjoy their meals and mealtimes. The Commission considers Standards 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 the key standards to be inspected. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 People who use services experience good care in this outcome area. We have made this judgement using available evidence, including a visit to the service. The people who live in the home are encouraged and supported by staff so that they continue to develop their independent living skills. EVIDENCE: People who live at Wellswood Drive need help and support with all daily living tasks. The care plans we looked at showed that the person attended college courses. There was a record of the support they needed, including what help they needed to manage their money. The records showed that staff from the home help them with this to make sure their money is managed well. On the day of our visit, we saw one person who lives at the home going out to a local day centre. Another person was due to go out after lunch. Staff were seen arranging to take one person out for a walk to go to the local shops. We saw an activity schedule in a care file. This showed the person went to a local day centre, went out shopping, visited local places and went to see their family
The Lady Verdin Trust Ltd - Wellswood Drive DS0000006558.V368126.R01.S.doc Version 5.2 Page 12 at the weekend. Staff told us that they help people who live in the home to decide where they would like to go on holiday and on day outings, so people have a choice about what they do. We saw that relatives and friends of people who live at the home may visit as they wish. One person who lives at Wellswood Drive told us that their sisters visit them and another said they go to see their family regularly. The daily routines at Wellswood Drive are flexible, depending on what activities people who live there are doing each day. On the day of our visit, one person who lives at the home was not due to go out on any planned activity. We saw staff helping him to clean his room, playing a board game with him and helping him to plan to go out to the local shops. We saw staff encouraging people to do as much as possible for themselves so as to maintain their independence. People’s likes and dislikes in terms of food were recorded in their care plans. The menus we saw showed that people who live at the home have choices for each meal. Two of the people who live at the home are encouraged to help with preparing meals and with washing up afterwards. This is so they can take part in the running of the home and develop independent living skills. The Lady Verdin Trust Ltd - Wellswood Drive DS0000006558.V368126.R01.S.doc Version 5.2 Page 13 Personal and Healthcare Support
The intended outcomes for Standards 18 - 21 are: 18. 19. 20. 21. Service users receive personal support in the way they prefer and require. Service users’ physical and emotional health needs are met. Service users retain, administer and control their own medication where appropriate, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. The ageing, illness and death of a service user are handled with respect and as the individual would wish. The Commission considers Standards 18, 19, and 20 the key standards to be inspected. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 18, 19 and 20 People who use services experience good care in this outcome area. We have made this judgement using available evidence, including a visit to the service. Staff respect the privacy and dignity of the people living in the home so ensuring care is deliver in a sensitive and caring manner. EVIDENCE: During our visit, we saw staff providing care for people who live at the home. For example, one person needed help to use the bathroom. Staff provided this help in a sensitive and caring way, making sure the person’s dignity was respected. It was clear they knew how the person preferred help with personal care to be given. The daily routines for people who live in the home are dependent on their planned activities and whether these are to take place in the home or in the local community. We saw that steps are taken to make sure people receive the help they need. For example, one person has a lifting aid in their bedroom to help them move around. We also saw a member of staff giving food to one person by PEG
The Lady Verdin Trust Ltd - Wellswood Drive DS0000006558.V368126.R01.S.doc Version 5.2 Page 14 feed. She confirmed that she has received training to carry out this procedure correctly and safely. During our visit, two district nurses came to the home to provide care for one of the people living there. They told us that staff in the home are very good at seeking advice about the healthcare needs of the people who live there. They also said staff follow that advice and monitor the health and well being of the people who are ill/require medical input. They did not have any concerns on how the people are cared for by staff. Each person has a separate file for recording their healthcare needs, how these are to met and what treatment and advice healthcare professionals such as doctors and nurses have provided for the person. Records of medicines prescribed and given to the person are also kept in this file. The records of medicines given to people who live in the home were satisfactory. The medicines are kept in a secure cabinet. Staff told us that the training provided by the Lady Verdin Trust was very good and included training on the safe administration of medicines plus other health related procedures. The Commission considers Standards 22, and 23 the key standards to be inspected. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 22 and 23 People who use services experience good care in this outcome area. We have made this judgement using available evidence, including a visit to the service. There are complaints procedures and safeguarding procedures for Wellswood Drive so that people who live at the home know their complaints will be listened to and they are protected from possible harm. EVIDENCE: The staff members we spoke with during our visit all knew about the complaints procedure for the home. They also knew what they must do if they saw or suspected that any of the people living in the home were being abused. They told us that guidance about both procedures is included as part of the induction training for all new staff. They also said they receive regular refresher training on safeguarding adults from abuse and on the Trust’s complaints/compliments procedures. During our visit we saw the complaints record for the home. There were no complaints received about the home since our last visit. We also saw a copy of the Lady Verdin Trust’s complaints procedure available in the home. A copy of the government’s guidelines on safeguarding adults from abuse, ‘No Secrets’, was available in the home for staff together with a copy of the local authority’s procedures and guidelines. This meant that staff had up to date guidance to help them support people in making complaints, as well as to make sure their well being was protected. In the information about the home that was sent to us before we visited, we were told that safeguarding procedures and guidelines were in place at the
The Lady Verdin Trust Ltd - Wellswood Drive DS0000006558.V368126.R01.S.doc Version 5.2 Page 16 home and that all staff receive training on the procedures. We were also told that the views of people who live at the home are listened to and acted upon. The intended outcomes for Standards 24 – 30 are: 24. 25. 26. 27. 28. 29. 30. Service users live in a homely, comfortable and safe environment. Service users’ bedrooms suit their needs and lifestyles. Service users’ bedrooms promote their independence. Service users’ toilets and bathrooms provide sufficient privacy and meet their individual needs. Shared spaces complement and supplement service users’ individual rooms. Service users have the specialist equipment they require to maximise their independence. The home is clean and hygienic. The Commission considers Standards 24, and 30 the key standards to be inspected. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 People who use services experience good care in this outcome area. We have made this judgement using available evidence, including a visit to the service. The lay out and design of the home is suitable for the people who live there so and it is well maintained so that people live in safe, comfortable surroundings. EVIDENCE: The home is a large detached bungalow on the outskirts of Crewe, about three miles from Crewe railway station and town centre. It is close to a doctor’s surgery, supermarket, pharmacy, bus stop and other local amenities. The appearance of the home is in keeping with the local community Since our last inspection, building work has been done at the home. What was the lounge has been extended and made into an en-suite bedroom for one of the people who lives at Wellswood Drive. The bathroom has been renovated and extended to provide a more spacious, comfortable area for the people who live in the home. Modern bathroom furniture has been installed and lifting aids provided for those people with mobility problems. One of the bedrooms has been converted into a shared lounge. These improvements have greatly
The Lady Verdin Trust Ltd - Wellswood Drive DS0000006558.V368126.R01.S.doc Version 5.2 Page 18 improved the interior of the home for the people living there. On the day of our visit, the home was clean, tidy and free from unpleasant odours. Each of the three people who live at Wellswood Drive has a bedroom that is decorated and furnished to their taste. We saw one person using a key to get into his own bedroom, so he was able to keep it as private as he wanted. We saw the people who live at the home moving freely between their bedrooms, the shared lounge and the kitchen. We saw that there was no lock on the door of the shared bathroom/toilet. This means that people using the bathroom cannot lock the door to maintain their privacy and dignity. We recommend that a lock of the kind that can be opened by staff from the outside in an emergency is fitted to the bathroom door. We also noted that staff were doing household jobs such as mopping the floor when the people who live at the home were getting ready for their daily activities. We recommend the times for carrying out some of the household cleaning be reviewed so it can be done when people have gone out. Service users are supported by competent and qualified staff. Service users are supported by an effective staff team. Service users are supported and protected by the home’s recruitment policy and practices. Service users’ individual and joint needs are met by appropriately trained staff. Service users benefit from well supported and supervised staff. The Commission considers Standards 32, 34 and 35 the key standards to be inspected. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 34,35 and 36 People who use services experience good care in this outcome area. We have made this judgement using available evidence, including a visit to the service. Staff working at Wellswood Drive receive induction and continuing training so they can provide good quality care that meets the needs of the people who live at the home. EVIDENCE: Lady Verdin Trust has a thorough recruitment process that involves obtaining all the necessary information and checks on new members of staff before they start work at the home. This is to make sure they are suitable to provide support and care for the people who use the services of the Trust. A staff member who we spoke with during our visit told us she had recently started working at the home. She said she had filled in an application form, had an interview, had a Criminal Records Bureau check and had to provide two referees before she was offered a job. She confirmed she is currently doing her induction training and once this is finished will start on the staff training programme provided by the Lady Verdin Trust. The Lady Verdin Trust Ltd - Wellswood Drive DS0000006558.V368126.R01.S.doc Version 5.2 Page 20 Other staff told us they had received induction training and continue to receive support and guidance from senior staff in the Trust. They said they have access to a range of training opportunities provided by the Trust, including NVQs in care. Staff meetings are held twice monthly at the moment and they receive individual supervision at least every six weeks. The information we received from the home before our visit confirmed that all staff receive training that covers care and support, health and safety, and in house induction where new staff work with a qualified member of staff. Induction training is monitored and assessed by the manage of the home and the Trust’s community support manager who agree the staff member is competent in their role before signing off the induction training. These processes mean that staff receive continuous training, their competence is monitored and they receive the support they need to make sure that the people who live at Wellswood Drive receive good quality care to meet their needs. Service users’ rights and best interests are safeguarded by the home’s policies and procedures. Service users’ rights and best interests are safeguarded by the home’s record keeping policies and procedures. The health, safety and welfare of service users are promoted and protected. Service users benefit from competent and accountable management of the service. The Commission considers Standards 37, 39, and 42 the key standards to be inspected. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 37, 39 and 42 People who use services experience good care in this outcome area. We have made this judgement using available evidence, including a visit to the service. Wellswood Drive is well managed so it is run in the best interests of the people who live there. EVIDENCE: Since our last inspection, the person who was the manager has left. At the time of this visit, a senior manager from Lady Verdin Trust was providing management cover whilst the newly appointed manager for Wellswood Drive completed her induction training with the Trust. This new manager will be responsible for both Wellswood Drive and another of the Trust’s services. Staff told us that they had received good support and guidance from the previous manager and were concerned that this should continue with the new manager. The Lady Verdin Trust Ltd - Wellswood Drive DS0000006558.V368126.R01.S.doc Version 5.2 Page 22 A senior manager of Lady Verdin Trust told us that the views of the people who live at Wellswood Drive and their relatives are sought about the home. The Trust also receives regular feedback from the local authorities that pay the fees for the people who live at the home. This helps to make sure people’s views are taken into account and the home is run in the best interests of the people who live there. The information we received from the home before our visit told us, ‘we provide a range of policies and procedures to assist staff in their caring for residents. Staff receive supervisons, training and guidance to assist them with their personal development and the care we provide to our residents’. We looked at some of the health and safety records for the home including the fire safety plan, records of fire drills, weekly fire protection equipment tests and monthly tests of the emergency lighting. These were all up to date. We saw risk assessments about equipment in the home such as the bath chair and possible risks to the people who live there, such as burns and scalds. These were all satisfactory. We also checked that the gas, fire alarm and electricity supply had been serviced or tested to make sure they were safe. Whilst we were visiting the home, tests on the small electrical appliances in the home such as lamps were bring done to make sure these were all safe.
