Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received, or asked for since the last Annual Service Review on 30th December 2008 and Key inspection on 13th November 2007. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQQA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQQA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. The results of any other visits we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Information we have about how the service has managed complaints. What the service told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Relevant information from other organisations. What people told us in surveys. We received nine completed surveys from residents and three from social and health care professionals. What has this told us about the service? The AQQA gave us brief information. We looked at the information in the AQQA and from the surveys and our judgment is that the home may not still be providing a good service. The manager told us that she provides all prospective residents with a brochure and that once a person takes up residency terms and conditions are provided. Five out of eight residents said in surveys that they received enough information to help them decide if this was the right home for them. However, only three people confirmed that they had received a contract. The majority of residents said in surveys that they always received the care and support and medical care they needed. The manager told us that the home has good relationships with GPs, district nurses and community psychiatric nurses. Where appropriate the end of life pathway is used, (this is a special care plan put in place when a person is reaching the end of their life). It was not clear from the AQQA if the home employs an activities co-ordinator, although seven residents said that the home always arranges activities that they can take part in. Half of the residents who completed surveys said they always liked the meals, the remaining half said usually. The manager told us that in the last twelve months they have introduced a healthy breakfast. All of the residents said in surveys that they knew how to complain. The manager told Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 us that she has not received any complaints about the home. It was not clear from the AQQA what training staff have had about safeguarding adults, although the manager told us that information about this is displayed in the home. There have been no safeguarding referrals made about this home in the last twelve months. It was not clear from the AQQA what improvements there have been to the environment in the last twelve months. Six out of eight residents said that the home is always clean and fresh, however, two social and health care professionals commented in surveys that there was an unpleasant odour in the home. One said the smell of urine is overpowering and the other said occasionally there is a faint smell of urine when you visit in the morning. In the AQQA the manager told us that she has established six to eight weekly meetings for residents and/ or their representatives. The manager told us the majority of staff have an NVQ qualification in Health and Social Care and have had training in the principles of Equality and Diversity. Six care staff have also completed an NVQ level 2 qualification in dementia. Five residents said in surveys that there are always enough staff available when they need them and two said usually. Six residents said that the staff always listened to what they said. There is no registered manager for this home. Other comments from residents included: I am allowed to do the dishes because it gives me an interest and keeps me occupied, much prefer Manor to the last home I was in, cares for residents very well, more one to one attention and provide more activities . Other comments from health and social care professionals included: there is a genuine, warm caring atmosphere at Manor House. They are good at looking after people with unusual mental health problems, the manager is happy to take advise and always seeks to act in the best interests of the residents and I feel this home might benefit from support re: cleanliness and investment in manpower/resources. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a Key inspection by 13th November 2010. However, we may do a random inspection to make sure that the home is still providing a good service to people.
