Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: * The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. * Surveys returned to us by people using the service. * Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. * What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. * The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. * Relevant information from other organisations. * What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The service was sent their annual quality assurance assessment on the 4 November 2009 and asked to complete and return it to us by the 2 December 2009. This was completed and returned as requested. The home was last inspected by us on the 29 January 2009. The outcome rating following our visit was 2 stars, providing a good standard of care for people at the home. Information provided on the AQAA was detailed and outlined what support is provided by staff at the home, arrangements in relation to health and safety, staff training and development as well as areas of development and improvement they wish to explore over the forthcoming year. The Mews provides care and support to people with complex needs. Packages of care focus on the individual needs of people. This is carried out by a team of both qualified and unqualified staff. Further support is offered from the activity co-ordinators, of which there are 3, so that opportunities for social and emotional development can be provided. The home also actively involves and encourages involvement from relatives. Resident meetings are held 4 times a year and are generally chaired by a relative and newsletters are provided so that people are kept informed. Consideration is given to the religious and cultural needs of people with visit to the home from members of different faiths as well as people attending places of worship Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 within the community. Arrangements are also in place for those people who have an alternative diet. Opportunities are also in place with regards to staff training and development. The home has a dedicated training co-ordinator who sources training in all areas including specific courses in relation to the support needs of those living at the home. The home also liaises with relevant societies so that additional advice and support can be provided to the team. Skills for Care Induction is in place and NVQ training has also been provided. Most staff have completed the course at level 2 or above. The manager has also completed her NVQ training and is a qualified nurses. Information detailed on the AQAA showed that there had been 1 complaint and 1 referral in line with the local authorities safeguarding procedure. The manager is aware of her responsibilities in this area and relevant training is provided for staff, ensuring people are kept safe. As part of the review we also send out feedback surveys to people living at the home and staff. At the time of writing this report no feedback surveys had been returned by residents however we did receive surveys from 6 staff. Their comments included, everything is done the way it should be, the manager and deputy manager are really good, equipment is provided when needed and it is the staff that makes the home do well. Some comments were less positive with regards to the quality of food and communication between the owners and staff. These areas should be explored. Our judgment is that the service still provides a good service for the people who receive support. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The Care Quality Commission will continue to monitor information about this service and will carry out an inspection when required.
